Help: Should I take the subject tests?

Hello reader, I’m thinking of taking the math subject 1 and 2 tests. I wanted to ask those who’ve taken it will it help me get accepted into the colleges I want to go into? I have a low GPA(~3.5), if I got 700+ on them would it make colleges think I have what it takes? If you’ve taken the test do you know of any good study materials and how long it would take me to master them?

Thank you in advance.

Subject Test scores are not going to “make up for” or “offset” high school grades. GPA and course rigor are almost universally the most important factor in college admissions. It reflects how effectively you’ve learned and grown over 3+ years of education.

A standardized test is how you performed on one day. And among standardized tests, Subject Tests are less meaningful than the core SAT or ACT.

A Subject Test can provide an additional data point to an application, so it will “help” for schools where they are considered. But don’t overestimate their value.

There’s no point in taking both Math tests. If you complete Pre-Calc/Trig by Junior year, take Math 2. Barron’s is the best book to prepare for the Math2 test.

Thank you.

How have you done in your math classes? Have you taken practice math SAT subject tests?

If your grades in math are not all that good, then I do not understand how you are going to do well on the SAT subject tests.

If your precalculus / trigonometry course is of good quality, and you do well in it, you may not need to do any additional prep for the math level 2 subject test.

But subject tests are trending toward becoming less used these days, so they may not be all that helpful except for the diminishing number of colleges that want to see them. Those that want to see them typically want to see at least two (and not both in math).

Thank you. I guess ill review what we’ve done in class and start studying.

Studying for countless hours always gets the job done.

@merciful News this morning, subject tests are being eliminated by College Board.

AAHHHH
Well, thankfully I haven’t bought any books yet but that is utterly stupid.

Saw this…so subject tests seem to be…done.

Does this mean that my Subject Test registration is canceled?
There will not be any future U.S. administrations of the Subject Tests. International students will have the opportunity to take Subject Tests in May and June 2021 before the program is sunset altogether. Students can work with College Board to change a Subject Test registration to an SAT registration or receive a refund.

WOW!

Does anyone happen to know whether this applies to the GRE subject tests? One daughter was thinking of taking the GRE biology test this year in anticipation of applying to graduate schools at some vague point in the next few years.

It does not apply to GRE subject tests

Thanks!

After my post I did notice in an article that the College Board said that the AP tests were more useful. Of course the AP tests do not apply as an alternative to GRE exams, and exams that students get while in university are not standardized across many universities so it would seem to make sense for the GRE to still continue unchanged.

Wait, what are GRE exams?

See this link for information:

The GRE is the Graduate Record Exam and is used as part of the admission criteria for graduate schools and some professional schools.

@merciful

Would you recommend me taking this or is this unnecessary?

“Would you recommend me taking this or is this unnecessary”

No, no, no. Not for at least four or five years. GRE exams are only appropriate for someone who either has recently graduated from university or is about to graduate from university. The GRE also has subject tests, but you need to have completed or nearly completed majoring in the subject in university with at least a bachelor’s degree before you would even think of taking a GRE exam. The test will cover what you will learn in a full four years of university education.

I was only wondering because of the fact that the SAT subject tests have been cancelled.

@merciful are you asking if a HS student should take the GRE? No, I would not recommend this.

The GRE tests are for students who are applying to graduate programs, not undergraduate programs.

I don’t know anything about the GRE subject tests…perhaps @skieurope can comment whether a high school student should take them. I’m going to guess…no.

No. They are for grad school admissions only.
