-If you guys get the same contract type then you guys will be placed together
-yes, some spring admits meet up and get apartments together.

Note: though it is not guaranteed that you will get housing for Spring, last year pretty much everyone who applied for housing in spring from FPF got it.

If you look at the big picture, choosing UCSD over Berkeley based on lack of housing is not logical. Dorms let you meet people no question about it, but it by no means guarantees any solid friendships. But if you are the outgoing type, whether you lived in the dorms or not you'll surely make friends.

I can agree that choosing UCSD over Berkeley SOLELY or MOSTLY based on lack of housing is not smart. I see dorms as a social lubricant, something in which Berkeley is often lacking. Too often do I notice freshmen finding housing their second year with their roommate/someone from their floor for me to say that dorms are not perhaps the best way to make friends your first year. If you're the outgoing type, you can make friends anywhere, but sadly most students at Berkeley are not truly the outgoing type.

Maybe it shouldn’t be but my guess is that the university not guarantying them residence hall housing for their first year will be a deal breaker for a lot of spring admits and potential FPF students. Unless you live close enough to commute, who’s going to be willing to wait until mid-July/November to see if they get a fall/ spring housing offer. Most people will live too far to commute to Berkeley or won’t want to if they can. Plus, even if they want to & can find an apartment, my guess is that most peoples’ parents won’t be willing or able to pay for them to rent and furnish an apartment.

It should also be noted that if you do get offered housing the university says that:“Most likely, you will receive an offer for a triple occupancy space in highrise Units 1,2, or 3”. https://calrentals.housing.berkeley.edu/student_services_d_faq.asp

Is that the housing you'd choose if you could pick?

Are there any spring admits here that went to Berkeley and didn't get housing, and ended up regretting their decision to attend Berkeley?
This whole housing situation is really the main thing that is keeping me from deciding to go to berkeley, but if most people don't see that as a valid reason, I guess I'll go there? I'm just scared I'll end up regretting my decision b/c of lack of dorms and then it'll be too late to do anything

I think this is the first time that spring admits aren't guaranteed housing for the spring & that's probably because Clark Kerr bldgs 2,3 & 4 will be undergoing renovations. I think that means the university will have appx 600 less rooms/1200-1500 less dorm spaces to lease in 08-09.

Living in a unit 1/2/3 triple can suck in some aspects... but you get one more roommate, and one more opportunity to make a close friend :)

But overall spring admits not guaranteed housing in the spring is not fair at all; how it has been for the last 2 years is that even if you don't get housing for fall b/c of fpf you can still transfer to the dorms in the spring.

okay dorming is not the SOLE reason. but regardless, anyone want to room with me? let's all facebook together!
