HELP! Spring admit and worried about housing

So I'm now deciding between UCSD and UCB except that I'm a spring admit. I mean i don't really mind that i'm a spring admit, my big worry is that i won't be able to get a dorm. Do any of you know the chances of people on the fall extension program getting dorms? Also, is themed housing more expensive than dorms? Can someone possibly tell me the price difference because i would just do theme housing except i have a really tight budget. If this whole housing thing doesn't work out i'll just go to ucsd.....HELP!

there was an online chat today, and they said it was about 50% that get housing, but i'm not sure if there is waitlisting after that? it was kind of unclear

there's another online chat on april 10, just to let you know :). you can get there from 'myberkeleyapp'

oh yay thanks!

bumppppp

last year for spring admits participating in fpf 50% got housing for fall. i highly doubt it will be 50% again since much of clark kerr will be closed all year for remodeling.

FPF students get the housing that's left over by the fall admits. FPF students won't be sent housing offers until Mid to late July and then only appx 50% will get housing offers. So what are you supposed to do if you find out you didn't get housing in July?

You'll have 1 month to get non-university housing in Berkeley for the fall term. Do you think much will be available in late July? It'll be too late to accept an admittance at another university.

Did the school administrators comment about this on the on-line chat?

Was there discussion of the fact that you're also not guaranteed housing for the spring. If you don't get fall housing & re-apply for spring, you go back into the lottery for spring term housing & won't find out if you're getting housing until Mid to late November. If you find out you didn't get housing in November, then you have to scramble to find your own housing for spring term. Sounds crummy!

Isn't there a private dorm available that is closer to the campus than Clark Kerr? How bad can one semester there be?

Wow they took away the guarantee of housing for spring admits in spring.. that stinks. So now it poses the possibility that no doubt some spring admits will lose out on the freshmen dorm experience.

There are a number of other private dorms: International House, Westminster House, Telegraph Commons that you can check out.

where does it say that they took away the guaranteed housing for spring admits in the spring?

i have a question, if my friend is a fall admit and im a spring one. would my chances of getting housing increase if she requests me as her roomate and i request her?

No. Roommates are assigned only when both receive the same chosen housing preference. They do not link roommates up and then assign housing for them together.

states re: FPF
"Although residence hall housing is not guaranteed for your first year, we are currently projecting that we will be able to house approximately 50% of the students who applied by the deadline,...Housing is guaranteed for the second year." (who'll want it then?)

no guarantee for housing for spring admits stated at http://www.housing.berkeley.edu/livingatcal/springfreshmen.html

If you want to guarantee yourself a dorm, go signup for a theme program and get in.
Living at Cal - Theme Programs

There are 6 theme programs in the residence halls - African American
Asian Pacific American
Casa Magdalena Mora
Global Environment Theme House
Unity House
Women in Science & Engineering

Maybe you can land a dorm room if you're interested in one of those themes.

wow this sucks.........this is making me rethink going to berkeley. does financial aid help cover the cost of theme dorms?

no it should not. No non-BioE student should ever choose SD over Cal. Financial aid generally covers housing.

Choosing SD over Berkeley because of housing isn't a logical reason...

There are plenty of good reasons to choose UCSD over Berkeley. Possibly not getting housing your first year because you're a spring admit is definitely one of them. I know I would hate to go to college my first year and not be able to live in the dorms, since I won't know anyone and it's easy to meet people in the dorms. That probably shouldn't be the sole reason to choose one college over another but if it's a big deal to you and especially if you were kinda already on the edge anyway, might want to go with UCSD instead.

So, for example, if I were a spring admit and my friend, who's a fall admit, requested me as her roommate, then she would end up rooming with some random person?

Oh, and if spring admit students don't receive housing, woudn't it be possible if they all banded together and got into groups of 3 or 4 and found an apartment outside of Berkeley? :)

Vienna, I'm in the same boat and I'm willing to get together with others to find a place!
