HELP!!! They CHEATED off my AP Chem test!!!

Ok

So this is what happened:

My school has a very low AP-passing rate. Last year, only 1 student passed the AP Chem test and that was with a 3.

So this year, I took the class and I bought the AP Chem prep book and I studied independently for months so that I could get a 5.

I took the test, and it was very simple. I definetely got a 5.

But my school stuck 17 kids in an absolutely tiny room. Everybody could've copied.

The kid behind me slept through most of the multiple choice (I could hear him snoring behind my head). He woke up in the last minutes of the MC section, took advantage of the fact that I was STILL working on some I had left blank, and COPIED MY ENTIRE MULTIPLE CHOICE.

He not only copied my entire MC section but then gave the majority of the answers away to another student sitting next to him.

The proctor, of course, did not notice anything.

I decided not to put my grade in jeopardy by saying anything to them during the test. I finished the test to the best of my ability and told my school's AP Coordinator about the cheating after the test was over.

I also e-mailed the Office of Testing Integrity. I also called them to ensure they do something about it.

Unfortunately, my AP Coordinator refuses to do anything on the subject. It seems that a cheating incident on an AP test is very embarassing for the school.

I am very angry because I do not want someone who SLEPT for the entire test to pass AP Chem because of the months of independet study I did. I am really scared the college board ignores this and does nothing about it.

Have any of you ever heard of a similar situation and the outcome of it? What else can I do to ensure that this does not go unsolved?

Thank you so much!!!!

Don't worry, if The College Board notices that that cheater's MC score is much different than his FRQ score (like getting 65/75 on the MC but getting only like 20/72.5 pts on the FRQ), they will flag his test for further review. Your statement will help solidify the fact that he cheated.

stop snitching hahah

If I were in your position, I think I wouldn't do more than what you already did. I think that's enough. But just wondering, how come he copies THE ENTIRE MULTIPLE CHOICE? as in how do you even know he could copy the whole thing? isn't it like the multiple choice section is picked up before you start FRQ? I have AP CHem late testing, so, I'm not sure abt that. If CB sees a definite pattern, which should be apparent, then, they would take necessary actions, if nothing is found out, still, they are not going to get a better score than you did (since they most likely bombed FRQs anyway, and MCs alone shudn't give them all 3s) Even if they get 3s, that wudn't take them any far, neither in college decision nor in college....so, just stop worrying abt it, and since you've already notified CB abt this, and they know that you are the one who everyone else copied from...I think you should be fine.

you should have said something to him after the test. i would have at least started s hit with him

Oh come on rade88 it would upset you too if you studied really hard and someone who didn't got to get a 5 too.

I'm confused as to why you just did NOTHING. You could have covered up your answers at least.
I think you should have said something to the proctor- the proctor would have done the right thing and the kids who cheated would have their tests taken away.

The difference between the MC and FRQ thing makes since, but then again, if the kids didn't do anything, then it might just look like, "Oh they were tired so they didn't write anything"

It sounds strange but it is plausible to think that some may just give up on FR because you can sometimes get a score of 2/3 if you do perfectly on the MC. Although most students who do well on MC will try on FR

I really feel bad for you- what your AP Coordinator is doing is WRONG. Whoever it is NEEDS to be reported to CB I think.

Best of Luck.

If it were me in the situation, I would have raised my hand and informed the proctor immediately. Of course, I would have been so furious that I would have end up punching that dirt bag in the face. In all seriousness, you should have put your arm over your sheet or something. Good for you for contacting the office of testing integrity though.

I can relate to you so well. On Monday, when I was taking the AP Biology Test, which I had studied so hard for and was completely prepared for, I noticed this girl looking at my answers. She was being so obvious and she is in my AP Biology class. She failed the whole year and finally passed with a C- for the 3rd marking period. The instant I recognized she was looking at my MC answers, [which was when I was into questions 30], I covered my answer sheet and only bubbled in when I was completely sure that she couldn't see my paper. I believe that you did the right thing and I agree with Yatta. The CB checks for consistency on the test. This means that if one part of your test doesn't match up correctly with another part, they will become suspicious and they will look at it again. In your case, they already know that this student cheated and they will most likely invalidate his grade. [=

being inconsistent means they're done!!

no offense to you but cheating is definitely a 2-way thing once you know its going on. you could easily cover up your answer sheet and stop it right at the source.

I do feel bad but sometimes you have to do what you can when you can. Covering your own test is a basic skill that you should have learned.

Wow.... Are you seriously posting on a forum about someone copying your test. Even if they did who cares. Why do you care about other people as long as you get a good grade. Get over yourself.

You're just as guilty as them, you knew they were cheating and you didn't do anything about it. You could have easily covered up your answers.

I pretty much have a similar question as elizlan: How is it possible that you knew he copied your "ENTIRE" multiple choice section? Either one of two things probably happened: One, you had no idea he was copying all of your answers (which, let's face it, would have taken several minutues to do), and the cheater or another student subsequently told you about it, which seems a little unlikely. Or two, you saw it happening, and you simply let it continue (which puts much of the blame on you). Or, perhaps, you may have saw him glancing at your paper and over-estimated the amount he copied. I mean, in my entire life at school, I don't think I've ever NOT noticed someone copying my test for an extended period of time, let alone an entire multiple choice section.

Ya done good. The OTI will definitely follow up on this for you.

For those of you who feel this doesn't matter, so why report it, consider the following.
1. If enough of this happens, your final score may be affected when the cut points are established.
2. Following up on these incidents is expensive. Guess who pays for it? However, if the word got around that last year students who cheated did not get scores released, students would think twice about cheating this way, and with fewer incidents to investigate, the costs of the exam won't go up as quickly.
3. Your AP Coordinator's response indicates that the school has serious problems with test integrity. The sooner they are cleaned up, the better it will be for your school. This could become SOP in all AP's at your school, and at that point, the school could lose the ability to administer the exams.

Based on your actions, I'd hire you today for any position that required maturity, integrity and responsibility.

All of those things are highly unlikely and he is still making a bigger deal out of it than should be made. You need social skills too in order to get a job, those arn't the only qualities that get you a job.

how come you let him copy your MC? why not cover it if you knew he was looking? (i think a couple others asked this already; you didn't answer their question, so i'll just ask it again)

okay, there are WAYS to stop ppl copying off your test.

with simple, easy, immediate results. no need to involve the proctor.

1) you cover your answers
2) you cover your answers..
3) you cover your answers!!!

uh....DUH!?!?!?!

my school is crazy though, we all have our little individual black cubicle divider things.

but still, even without dividers, all you have to do is put your fat arm over the answers you've filled in and aren't working on at the moment. or you hunch over your test and let your hair fall over it if you have long hair. (and if you have an anorexic arm, too bad.)

or you bubble with one hand, and cover the rest of your answers with the other. (multitasking...or becoming slightly ambidextrous. if you can't do this, all the chemistry in the world won't help you)

or you bring a ton of extra pencils/erasers and use those to cover your answers.

when you march into the battlefield of ap testing, you need to be armed with some necessary skills and weapons dude.

wow....yeah i really think this whole situation could have been easily avoided. it's not very easy to let someone copy an ENTIRE mc section...one or two answers, fine, but it's nearly impossible for someone to copy the entire thing, especially if you don't want to let them.

you've done all you can do.. plus, it is true that he probably sucked it up on FR and his test will be flagged for review.. college board won't take this situation likely.. don't worry

yeah no offense but i cant help but picture this story as the cheater being some big jock-type and you just like the nerdiest kid possible.

haha sorry i give in to generalizations

Bust them. Call ETS. Forget your AP coordinator. If they feel ashamed, then they SHOULD feel ashamed.
