I read the Danforth article and I'm still not sure what the program is about

nonetheless, I understand Washington U is a very, very good school for pre-medicine students but I would still go with the security of a BA/MD program

the plus with going to Wash U is that if you can do well in your classes there, I would expect you to have your pick of the lot for med school

If money is not an issue, I would pick WashU for the undergrad experience. If you're talented enough to be accepted to this select group at WashU AND BA/MD programs now, there is no doubt you will be accepted to great med schools in 4 years. Plus, you will have a WashU education under your belt as opposed to one from BU.

I'm stuck in the same situation. Duke vs. BU 7 year med program, and I've no clue what to do. I've heard so much advice in the past few days it'll take me a few more to just process them. At Duke or WashU, I know that we would have to work hard, whereas BU it wouldn't be as hard to keep that 3.2 and attain the national average.

It's really a tough choice, what are you thinking of doing?

Both of u shud go to BU, BU undergrad isn't so bad and the med skool is awesome, The location of BU med is great and the clinical experience you would recieve at BU med is unmatched, but if ur set on highly ranked, prestigious undergrads, then i dunno, it's a tough choice.

hey kvjc11
i wonder if there is some way of getting the stats for residency placements at BU? the info i have thus far is anecdotal: the few people i know who graduated from the program ended up at stanford, baystate med, loma linda, and ucsd.

also, the people i spoke to told me that boston is THE place for medicine as it allows for great opportunities for rotations in places like mass general.

I saw those myself, but I don't know enough to judge whether those are great residency matches or not. How do we know? Are there rankings for matches as well?

The best residencies are usually affiliated with the best hospitals. And u can find rankings on the nations best hospitals on US news. And jus by looking at the matches u can tell that a lot of the matches are with ivy league med skools as well as other highly ranked medical programs.

good question, rajpatel. i don't know enough about residency programs either. i compared the bu residency matches for 2005 with other top programs like brown, cwr, and nu. i saw no difference: most people in these programs, including bu are matched in well-known residencies.

of course, there are some people who, in spite of graduating from programs that are deemed "prestigious", do not get well placed.

in other words, a top-notched program does not guarantee a good residency placement. it really depends upon how well an individual does in his/her own program no matter where it ranks on the us news compiled list.

what is important to me is that i get as much clinical and research experience as possible. i have heard that bu will offer me opportunities for me to explore these options, more so than any other program.

Residency is really really far away. Right now, the primary focus should be on whether or not the undergrad/med skool will offer you the education/opportunities that you desire. Residency matches fluctuage each year for every med skool. As qtpie stated above, how well you do in med skool will be the determining factor in where you place.
