Help! Transferring from cc to UCs

So I go to a cc in SoCal, and I am hearing different things from different people, even different counselor a as to what I am supposed to do in order to transfer to a UC. I am a first year student wanting to transfer to UCI majoring in psychology. I’ve heard of the ASSIST website but I am wondering what courses do I have to take to transfer to UCI or any other UC. I’ve heard from my counselors that I need to fulfill the IGETC requirements and my major requirements in order to transfer but other students are telling me that for transferring and programs such as TAG I need just major requirements, and what it says on ASSIST. What do I need to do?

Thanks for any help

Go on ASSIST, it will help you figure out what you are lacking. You also may want to look at TAG requirements. The UCs don’t take sophomore level transfers. Don’t you have a transfer counselor at your CC?

Sorry if I didn’t make it clear. I want to transfer after my sophomore year in order to be a Junior year transfer student. My cc has counselors but they were very vague on what I need to do in order to transfer. They are telling me that I need to complete the IGETC in addition to the major requirements on ASSIST. Is that true?

I would post your questions here and several knowledgeable posters can answer your questions.

Some students do complete the IGETC requirements and some don’t. It really depends on the particular UC’s requirements for the school you wish to attend and for your major major as well as your previous HS course history. You really need to go on ASSIST.

I understand that I need to complete everything it says on ASSIST. My question is do I have to complete the IGETC in addition to what it says on ASSIST or do I just need to do what it says on ASSIST to transfer

It’s to your advantage to complete either the 7 course pattern/IGETC/UC campus specific courses and all major prereqs so once you transfer, you can concentrate on taking your upper division classes. Also, you are competing with applicants who HAVE completed them.

Here’s the info:

If you’re going to TAG to UCI, you have additional requirements but you don’t need IGETC however again, you’re competing with applicants who will have completed it.

Completing IGETC means that you will be considered to have completed general education requirements for most majors at most UCs and CSUs. It is not required for transfer, but it can be nice in that you won’t have to worry about general education courses after transferring to a campus and major that accepts IGETC in place of its own general education requirements.

Even if you do not complete IGETC, you may need to complete some general education requirements before transfer, as specified by the campus (commonly English composition requirements and the like).
