Help! Uc application prompt #1

The prompt: Describe the world you come from — for example, your family, community or school — and tell us how your world has shaped your dreams and aspirations.

What if I don't know what I want to do in the future? I'm undecided in my major, kind of looking in the science/math/engineer direction but I'm really open to anything. What else could I talk about besides my career goals?

sup sup. haha

You could just talk about the kind of person you want to be, what you want to do for society, or for your family etc. It could be some small, cherished childhood dream that you want to fulfill.

I’m in the same situation as you, applying undecided to L&S. But I also know what broad field I will be pursuing (Social Sciences) and I just wrote about how my world shaped my love for that field. You could do the same.

Best luck! :)

Thank you so so much for the tips! :)

Do you think it’s okay to write about a specific event that influenced who I want to be? The prompt says “world”, but I feel like it could refer to a smaller realm. For instance, I was thinking about how I loved reading books as a child and the library was my world. Then a couple of years ago, I met a little kid while I was volunteering at the library who really impacted my life.

Would this fit prompt #2 of the UC app better? And should I write something pertaining more to math/science instead?

If you focus your essay more on how the library was your world, and less on the incident, then it should work fine. If you’re planning to emphasize the incident more, then use the essay for the second prompt. And remember, for the first prompt you have to write how your WORLD has SHAPED YOUR DREAMS AND ASPIRATIONS.
