Help!! UCLA Housing Contract

For various reasons I have not made my final determination on whether to continue at my current 4 year college or finalize my transfer to UCLA … ugh! The next couple of weeks will be crucial in making that decision.

I have now received the UCLA Housing Offer / Contract that UCLA wants submitted NOW.

I am unclear on whether the CONTRACT UCLA wants me to submit for on-campus housing binds me for the entire academic year upon (i) my signing OR, not until (ii) I make the 1st payment which is due on June 27th. Damn lawyers make everything so complicated. As I said the 2 weeks between now and then is really important for my final determination so I would like to sign the Contract now to keep on-campus housing option available as long as I am not bound to have to pay for the whole year if I don’t make that first payment (I assume if I don’t make that payment the entire contract would just be voided and I’d lose my on-campus housing option altogether & not be liable to pay anything???).

The CONTRACT says:

“2. TERM. The term of this Contract shall be the Academic Year term as defined in the Housing Offer Notice of Acceptance, and the dates of occupancy shall be as specified in the Housing Offer, incorporated herein by reference. By signing below, Student is agreeing to be bound for the entire term of this Contract. This Contract, properly executed, shall be effective on the date the first payment required by the Housing Offer is received and accepted by University.”

Please let me know if you happen to know if I can safely sign the CONTRACT without binding myself to have to pay for the room for the whole year if I don’t make the 1st payment on June 27th. Thanks!

you are asking for legal advice. Legal advice comes from lawyers. Most colleges have free or low-cost consultations with lawyers available to students. Check at yours.

Call UCLA housing office and ask. They can help you. I didn’t even read my contract.
