help...URM

i was juss wondering... how much does acceptance chances increases if u r a URM. Thanks for the help.

1% American Indian/Alaskan Native
8% Asian/Pacific Islander
3% Black/Non-Hispanic
9% Hispanic
76% White/Non-Hispanic
3% Non-Resident Alien

From those statistics, I would assume that URM doesn't help/hurt an applicant's chances. You're going to need to be just as qualified as the next person, no matter what race you are. Sorry, that's probably not what you wanted to hear.

I actually disagree

I think being a URM definitly helps is and advantage especially for the american Indian and African American communities

That does not mean that just because you are mexican, that you are going to get in....

But, I do believe they it will give a small push in you applicaiton

This is just my opinion

I think that being a URM will certainly be to your advantage. Are you AA? From what I have read (just google ND and diversity), I believe the diversity issue is very high on the priority list of the adcom at ND and has been for the past two years. ND and UVA I believe were at the very top of schools who are really taking action to attract bright AA students. The ND AA alumni association is strong and well organized. There is a ND admissions chat thread from 2004 (?) where this is discussed by a ND staff memeber. I read that for a URM one must be in the top 10% of their class. Now, that was 2004, and from the postings of stats for this year's 2006, where ND was admitting the top 3.1% ranks of students, competition is fierce.
I haven't really read anything else about other URM, such as hispanics. Has anyone?

Hmmmmm, I'd like to see some ND admissions chats. Where does one find it?

The last chat can be found here... https://admissions.nd.edu/chattime/chatarchive.cfm?chatID=45J2444286A4641

Also, being a URM SIGNIFICANTLY helps your chances of getting in, we just don't have enough URM applicants apply! I will share more stats on this after admissions season, but it is significant.

I am a URM and got in. Of course, I also have a 35 ACT and good recs & extracurriculars, and I like to think that my essay was decent, so I can't exactly tell you how much it helped or hurt in my case.

I do know that I was named a Notre Dame Scholar and was invited to the Reilly Weekend, so maybe it did help.

so what if you're Macedonian?

thats actually a serious question. my dad moved to the united states from the former yugoslav republic of macedonia (official name) when he was 5. while i dont know the official statistics-i should probably look them up-i would assume that Macedonian is more of a minority than most of the categories provided on the ND application.

Macedonia... Georgi Hristov.

Right.

This is a bit weird because Macedonians aren't exactly caucasians...

You're probably a dual citizen or a full American citizen, right?

Then how does this work for the actual status...

not sure what hes doin playin in cyprus...but he was born in the same city (bitola) as my dad

full american citizen. this is the way i look at it. many African Americans can check a minority box on an application. yet how many of those individuals do you think had parents who were actually born in africa?

jonoam, you raise an interesting point, one that unfortunately is missed when most people count the statistics.
