Help w/ Freshman year schedule?

@GraceDad how so?

The above tool can keep you up all night :). Perfect for those of us Osprey parents (helicopter parenting is so 2000’s, the Osprey is far more sophisticated). It looks to me that out of the 6-7 Profs in 211 half have pogrom type grading while the other half have decent grading (40% A’s in Calc I? where do I sign up?).

Having said this, I would worry more about what is covered in 211 vs 119 (?) from the standpoint of premed hard science classes. If you need decent integration skills and 119 is not meeting the requirements things could get ugly.

Any current premeds? in other schools there generally are several levels of calculus, say, for the masses (survey of calc), life sciences (probably 119-ish), real calc for engineers/science majors (211), and maybe honors 211 of some kind.

a bio major should probably take M211? are you expected to know how to integrate before you get in there?

@turbo93

Most pre-meds in top 20 schools already had AP CALC AB and BC. IUB is good enough for pre-meds.

M211 Calc I - Take Math 211 at IvyTech during summer for it to be transferred to IUB for M211. Check this out:

www.ivytech.edu/files/IUBTransferList.pdf

C117 Principles of Chem with Lab --OK (5 cr)
Bio-L 112 with Lab – OK (3 cr)

AP English Lang or Lit can be transferred to IUB to get credit for W131. SAT Reading (>670?) can be used to waive W131; but, I would not advise that since you won’t get the credits for W131 which is required for some medical schools. So, take it at IvyTech or your local community college if you don’t have 4 on APs.

Your should take Psychology (3 cr) and SOC S-100 (3 cr)

This schedule of 14 credits should be very manageable.

You should try to do well on your foreign language placement test. College of Science requires three semesters of foreign language courses. They could be a drag on your GPA.

And, take a look at this:

http://hpplc.indiana.edu/

@TheInstitute Listen to the advice on this forum…Medical Schools will take students with high GPAs from “lower ranked” schools than lower ranked GPAs from “more prestigious schools”. And, believe it, science classes at IU are no joke…my daughter studied her butt off for an A- in Anatomy and a B in the Biology class. She is in Kelley but was considering pre-med so took these class as her “electives” LOL! With all seriousness, don’t be reckless and over commit your 1st semester freshman year…pace yourself.

I looked at previous exams of MATH 119 and 211. My cat could probably test out of 119 (he’s very smart). 211 doesn’t look all that difficult except for the likely 30% final, in which case it’s a free for all. Taking 211 at Ivy Tech is a noble idea (my older daughter did it) and I guess it (a) does not kill your IU GPA if you get a B and (b) you have time for other courses in the fall and © depending on how you take 211 (online for example) your homework could be a significant part of the grade (and the work), not a winner-take-all final.

The downside to that is that you have to send Ivy Tech transcripts when you apply to grad/med schools. So Med schools will know that you got a B but the B won’t be in your IU transcript.

Interestingly enough MATH 119 grade distribution is worse than 211…

1° Don’t try to transfer. Med schools DO NOT care about your undergrad’s ranking. They want you to be top of your class, regardless of where you attend. There is absolutely NO boost to coming from a top school. (There’s a kid on this very forum now trying to warn premeds not to do this, as this is what he did and in one semester, his GPA was no longer med-school worthy. Had he stayed put, he would have been a good contender for med school, but now he’s at a top school and won’t be going to med school. Is that trade off worth it to you?)
2° Are you in the Honors College? If so, taking 112H at IU is a good idea. If not, Berndton is a good prof to have for 112L.
3° You’re supposed to take M211. If you’re doing well in Precalculus Honors, you should be okay (IU has a special section for students who took Calc AB, so there should not be as many retakers as elsewhere.)
4° Check with the Foreign language department’s page or the catalog for the scores required on SAT Foreign Language or AP tests to get the requirement waived. See whether you get “back credit” or not.
5° Ask IU if you could take a couple classes at Ivy Tech before Fall. Verify with them that you can (at some schools, doing this would jeopoardize your freshman status. I think it’s okay at IU but better check as the consequences are enormous.) In that case, taking M211 or BioL111 over the summer would be a good move, keeping Bio 112, Chem 117, Psych or Soc, and Math 211 or Stats - that should be a manageable schedule for your first semester.

@MYOS1634 I have a 3.5 GPA and 2120 SAT, so I didnt make it into honors college. However, i should be after my first semester at IU. Can you request to get certains profs? Also, what is the deal with C117? People say it’s hard, and others say it’s easy. Is it just like AP chem?

@MYOS1634 IU accepts any transfer credit approved in the CTS database regardless of when it was taken. I came to IU as a freshman with 3 college courses and a bunch of AP. Indiana residents I know came to IU with 50+ credit hours since many Indiana classes are dual credit. They were Freshman for everything except the credit report and registration.

@TheInstitute OMG are you listening? Virtually nothing at IU will be as easy as high school, AP or not. Major-level science classes at IU are most certainly harder than your AP version. Only the science courses for non-majors will be relatively easy. Given your stats above, I would guess you are bright, but no genius. You will run into folks on this board and others at IU that blow away those stats. Do not come in overconfident and get surprised.

You can register for any class you like, as you build your schedule. Professors are almost always listed otherwise it’s Staff. Check out this thread to be ready for registration:

Be aware that getting a popular professor can be tough since all but Freshman registration is based on how many credits you have. Because of this, coming in with AP and college transfer credits will help you get ahead of others in the registration priority list. I am in my 4th semester at IU right now but have Junior standing based on credits. I will graduate with far more than the required 120 hours.

Finally, you can’t really judge how hard something is at IU until you take it or talk to someone in detail about the class. Everyone is different and you just never know what will challenge you. Sometimes it’s the material and other times it’s the professor’s style.

@IUBOOS I realize I am not a genius; however, i feel my performance in HS was a flop for I did not push myself nor try at all. I started going hard second sem senior year, after I learned about the intensity of pre med. Now, I have all A’s and will be retaking the ACT for a 34 in June. I am willing to put in more work than everyone in order to succeed and, I am fully aware that STEM classes are not easy by any means.

@TheInstitute I still don’t understand your taking the ACT again. Several people have now told you it doesn’t matter, but hey it’s your time and money, so good luck to you.

@IUBOOS I think I would come with a decent amount of AP credits. I have some from AP Bio, APUSH, AP World, AP French, and AP Lit.

@IUBOOS sorry. I am very naive in regards to college because I will be the first in my direct family to go to college in the United States. um, when would i take the placement exams for these classes? during my orientation?

@TheInstitute Don’t apologize. You’re on this board figuring it out, so good for you!

Placement exams are taken during your summer orientation. You’ll get info from IU. See here:

Sign up for the earliest date you can make and check out the thread below so you’ll be prepared:

It’s like AP chemistry but wayyyy more intense and with more competition for top grades.
To give you a comparison, you covered AP Chemistry with 5 periods per week over 10 months.
Chem 117 will be AP Chem, with 3 periods a week over 4 months. That’s how intense it is. You hav to hit the ground running.
(and in reality, you cover more ground in 4 months than in 10 months of HS).
