Help w/ Freshman year schedule?

Hey guys.

This is what I’m planning.
M211 Calc I
C117 Principles of Chem with Lab
Bio-L 112 with Lab
English or whatever I need to take to fulfill humanities credit.

I have AP credits that I will use to get out of history and language.

Is this schedule a recipe for destruction?

Is this pretty normal for gunner pre meds?

Unless I’m mistaken, I don’t think that your AP’s in language translate to credit. I think you can test into a higher level language course and if you get a C or better they will give you credit for the lower level language course

ok. thanks for this information. do you think this a hard schedule? I plan to study everyday and go 100 percent all of the time. Do u know anything about M211 and its difference from m119?

@TheInstitute I can’t really help you regarding the difficulty of your schedule. My son will major in Finance and I’ve done a little research regarding his schedule, but I have no clue how difficult most of the classes are that you’ve listed.

Check the grade distribution link for IU to get an idea of class sizes and grades…

Most of the people on here are business majors that don’t really know how hard these classes are. This tool will allow you to see what grades people get in them though. I typically use a combination of this and ratemyprofessors.com when I plan my schedule.

Follow the advice above to check out the reality of each of these courses.

I assume you’ve also checked out the pre-med path outlined here:
http://hpplc.indiana.edu/medicine/med-cw.shtml#IUSM

Study up on what medical schools really want from an undergrad course of study.

It’s really up to you to decide how hard to push. Unfortunately a decent percentage of smart high school kids get surprised once they hit the university level. IU science classes in particular seem geared to weed out the weak by being ridiculously hard compared to high school according to the pre-med and STEM kids I know. My advice is always to ease into it a bit first semester. Your comment in another thread that you’ll be going 100% the whole time is probably not realistic, but you know yourself best.

Unless it’s required as a pre-req or you’re a math major, I always recommend people avoid M211 and take M119.

what is hard about the class in your opinion? Would studying AP Calc AB over the summer be adequate prep for the course?

Studying AB would probably help because the AB AP test gives credit for M211

i would have a stronger application with M211 instead of m119. I mean M211 can’t be that hard?

Make your own decisions, but M211 looks like it has an average GPA of about 2.5, and generally smarter people are in that class than M119

@TheInstitute Stronger application with M211? Why?

I seriously doubt med schools care about which calc class you took as a Freshman undergrad. This isn’t like colleges judging your high school transcript and looking for Honors and AP courses to see if you challenged yourself.

In general, your undergraduate GPA is what matters most when applying for jobs or graduate/med schools later. If you take the advanced/honors versions of courses at IU and get A’s then great. If you take those classes and get less than A’s you’ve hurt yourself because nobody gives you any extra credit for the difficulty of the course and only see that lower grade.

My conclusions are informed by conversations with graduates and graduate level professors. When considering colleges and still thinking about a degree in Bio (I am a Kelley Honors kid now), a Professor/M.D. told me that a 4.0 GPA from a good school with average coursework was way better than a 3.5 from a tougher curriculum elsewhere.

As for M211 being that much harder, you can view old finals on the IU Math department website and judge for yourself how hard they are based on your current knowledge.

hello, i appreciate your feedback. unfortunately, I am in pre calculus due to a change in schooling for middle school and i never tried to test out, though i could have. in pre calc, i am getting high A’s on every test and my SAT reasoning math is not bad (720). I also plan on taking math level 2 subject test and getting a good score on it. Based on this context, do you think I could self study the Ap Calc AB curriculum and acquire a solid background in differentiation and integration by august.

My SAT is 2120, but I am retaking the ACT and going for a 34 for a stronger app during the transfer app process

i am a senior btw

@TheInstitute So… I’m confused

Why are you worried about your ACT score if already accepted? Med schools don’t care about your high school scores, just the MCAT and your undergrad GPA.

You can test out of Calc at IU by taking the departmental final. If you get a solid B on the test, you get full credit for M211 with a ‘S’ grade on your transcript (not counted in GPA). If you don’t get the grade, there’s no record of you taking the test and you can take whatever Calc class you like at IU or elsewhere. Without studying at all (stupid) and having only taken Calc AP (A-only) in high school, I got an 80 on the test. Since that wasn’t high enough and I didn’t want to waste time in my IU schedule with a Calc class, I took calc online at CC over the summer for transfer credit.

For test-out infor see here:

From what you’ve said, it’s likely you could cram a bit before the exam at the end of Fall and test out. You can always register for calc for the spring semester, take the test and drop the class off your schedule if you score high enough. They let you know your score over winter break well before the spring semester even starts.

or

You could take Calc in summer school or online BEFORE you come to IU.

@IUBOOS I want to transfer to a top 20 school because the top medical schools recruit from the more prestigious institutions for Undergrad

@TheInstitute So you’re going to transfer out of IU at some point and then apply to med school?

Even then, the new undergrad school won’t care about your ACT, only your IU GPA.

Once in college, it’s a clean slate.

@IUBOOS exactly

I’m sorry but there seems to be a severe disconnect here.
