Ok, so here's the situation. I got into Cal's EECS and UCLA's EE. I researched the campus life, the competitiveness of each dept, and a bunch of other data and stuff and found that i really want to go to UCLA. The problem is my parents are really anal about me turning down Cal :(

I need serious help in persuading my parents!!!

What are the advantages of attending UCLA's EE? Feel free to throw out scary statistics about Cal.

Why don't you tell your parents that you can start at UCLA and then transfer to Cal as a junior and graduate from up there? I know a couple of people who did that (both ways, one moving back to L.A. from Cal and from UCLA to Cal).

fact: students do BETTER where they are HAPPIEST :)
if UCLA feels like an environment you'll thrive in, and Cal didn't really jive with you, then that is a very very very important factor in deciding where you go. if it's prestige/rankings, your parents should keep in mind that names only open doors so far. you're the one who's got to get a competitive GPA and do well IN college to do well AFTER college!
there is no such thing as a "wrong" decision for college, if you go to the place that's right for you. parents don't always know best.
and where will you do well?
where you're happy!

Would doing EECS entail having other classes for the CS part?

Obviously, you will take computer science courses as required in the EECS major. There will be different programming languages learned in the CS courses, starting with SCHEME and Fortran.

anyone know the retention rate for Cal's EECS at the end of freshmen year and sophomore year? I would also like to kno the graduation rate (i've heard its extrmely low, but I need to see the source).
