I'm set to have an interview next week at an interviewer's home. I've worn a 3-piece to all of my other interviews, including a successful interview at a coffee shop, however I don't think a suit is necessary in a home, especially with all of the glitz that comes with Harvard anyways.

I have a nice "wardrobe" of cloths I wear to school, but am not so sure what to wear to the interview. I have very 'dressy' jeans, and a choice between a couple of white button downs and semi-silk polo's. I'm against khakis, since that is too casual and screams "I don't know when or how to wear a suit," much like the dorks at homecoming and prom wearing khakis.

What did you wear to your interview? Anyone interviewed at a home?

As much as you will hate to hear, I’d go with khakis and a a nice tucked in polo/button down stripped shirt. Its clean. Maybe add on an argyle sweater if you want to look a bit more polished… idk. Good luck with you interview, I hope you do great!

My dress jeans fit me much better, and certainty look better, I’m just not sure if it’s in the wrong direction. Even my better pair of Dockers are baggy, and all around plain/under-dressed.

REPEAT: As much as you will hate to hear, I’d go with khakis and a a nice tucked in polo/button down stripped shirt. Its clean. If necessary, buy new khakis.

If khakis mean beige pants to you- I can agree with Gordon. They are ubiquitous and boring. How about any kind of black, gray, navy, brown pants and a dress shirt? I think dark pants do look better.

Khakis/polo. Surprising considering my interviewer explicitly told me interviewers are no longer allowed to conduct interviews in their home.

Keep in mind, they’re instructed to look past your clothes because the interview is supposed to be completely informal…but they are people, too.

My Khakis are now out of the question. Sadly a suit is too… there’s just no way it would make a comfortable atmosphere in a home.

I’m very nervous about wearing dressy jeans. I put them on, and it seems like classy jeans and a polo or button down are for dates or something. I’m considering wearing just suit pants and a casual button down.

I think suit pants and the button down are great. Now, that’s done. Work on your answers to all those pesky interview questions- “What are your weaknesses? Where do you see yourself in 10 years? What are you reading?..” Good Luck!

Just put some clothes on man, relax… Wear what you would wear to go out to dinner with family or something. It doesn’t matter honestly as long as you don’t go in a miniskirt or naked.

The fact that this is such a big deal for you really does not bode well…

Since you so clearly have an excellent grasp on the importance of clothing, I’ll let you in on a little trick. Here’s what you do:

Walk into the interviewer’s house wearing khakis

Act like a khaki-wearing dork for a few minutes

Rip the khakis off (to the relief of the interviewer)

Discuss how ridiculous it would have been if you had seriously thought khakis would be a viable option as you both appreciate your real choice of fine dress pants

Laugh knowingly as the interviewer tells hilarious stories of the misguided saps who committed such fashion crimes during interviews in the past

Don’t forget to pick up your acceptance letter on the way out

This thread is about what to wear to an interview, not what to say during an interview. That’s why I did not discuss anything else besides cloths. Thankfully I’m feeling very prepared for my interview, with a short list of notes and questions I’ve reviewed.

It’s just this quandary of having an interview in a home bugs me… I’ve worn a suit to every other interview in my life.

I want to wear dress jeans and a nice polo or button down, but I really don’t like the thought of jeans at the interview of my lifetime. Suit pants don’t go well by themselves, especially tucked in.

Can we stop the birthday suit/naked jokes? At least four people have already said that. :D
