Can someone please help me figure out my chances for transferring to the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor for the winter 2012 semester?

GPA:3.44
My college right now: University of Michigan-Dearborn
Major: English (might change)
Applying to: LSA at Umich ann arbor
Credits: 30

High School gpa: 3.59
ACT: 28
Previously deferred for high school then rejected in the summer.

I'm trying to transfer in my second semester of sophomore year. does anyone have any idea if I have a good chance/bad chance of getting in? I would really appreciate any advice, because I really want to transfer!

GPA is kind of low, but I wouldn’t say you have no chance. I’m not sure what they expect of transfers from their satellite campuses. I transferred in the winter semester from another University, but my GPA was a 3.8.

yeah, i was hoping it would hit a 3.5 but my calc 2 class hurt me. How many credits did you have when you transferred winter sem? an what was your major?

I had 43 credits that transferred to Michigan. I don’t think major really matters. Mine was Business Administration but I transferred into the LSA program undeclared.

I don’t think you’ll get in, not because of your gpa, which is admittedly kinda low, but because of the number of credits you have. Michigan told me specifically that they prefer junior transfers over anyone else. You’re still basically a sophomore transfer so it’ll really hurt your chances because of how early you’re doing it. I know going to UM-Dearborn helps but having at least a 3.5 is essential because every single person I’ve seen that transferred successfully had at least a 3.6 and was at least a junior when they got in.

I’m in basically the same situation as you in that I was deferred and rejected from high school and had to go to a different school. I chose not to go to UM-Dearborn and instead went to a top 60 school out of state. I’m going to try to transfer into UM-Ann Arbor for the fall 2012 semester, when I’m a junior. My stats are 3.71 GPA right now with 31 credits. I’m also applying to LSA and I’m an Econ and Business dual major. In high school I had a 3.6 GPA and a 33 ACT. Just giving you an idea of the profile of other transfer applicants.

I would strongly suggest that you wait for one more semester before applying because it gives you a chance to get that GPA up to at least a 3.5 and allows you to be a junior transfer. I would say at this point you have a realistic shot at getting in because when I spoke with an admissions officer, she told me that grades are what they consider most by far, followed by year and then essays. Basically everything else doesn’t matter unless you have extremely unique life circumstances or an amazing public service record.

Good luck to you and I hope you get in but just be prepared for the bad news if you do decide to go through with this.

thanks for the advice! i know my gpa is kinda low which is why im taking summer classes to get my credits and gpa up. i have another question i need help with. right now im trying to choose between taking 2 summer classes or 1. if all goes well and i get As this is how my gpa could turn out.

2 summer classes: 3.52 gpa with 33 credits
1 summer class: 3.47 gpa with 30 credits

my problem is that everyone is saying credits matter a lot and 33 and 30 are not really that different. but my gpa changes a lot. does anyone think taking 2 classes will get me into michigan for the winter 2012 sem. or do i not have a chance either way, and i should wait till im a junior and apply fall 2012.

I would personally take the two summer courses if I were you. If you can theoretically get your GPA to above a 3.5, then you shouldn’t be too bad. If you plan to take 15 or so credits in the fall to also theoretically have 48 credits, then I say your chances could be decent if you apply when the winter 2012 applications open, and that you write great essays! I also hope you have some sort of extracurricular you say you did.

I still don’t think it would help you enough for you transfer chances. 3.52 and 33 credits are definitely better than what you did have but even so that may not be enough. Even though you theoretically will have 48 credits when you transfer, how many grades does Michigan actually see from you? You are still at a disadvantage because of when you are applying and how few credits you have compared to junior transfers. Besides, your GPA will still hurt you big time because the average transfer has at least a 3.6 so even though its higher than what Michigan recommends, it still may not be enough. Junior transfer is still your best bet, when you can get your GPA over 3.6. I won’t say don’t try it now because you could get in and it won’t hurt you to try two semesters in a row. I’m just saying that your best bet is still fall 2012.

Yeah, I’d have to agree to wait an extra semester and try to accumulate more credit hours under your belt. It will do nothing but help anyway, and yeah I know it seems like forever longer but your chances for admission would drastically increase. Michigan specifically states they prefer junior transfers and I think anthony is right in that when they matriculate your transfer credits, you’ll be at a lesser than junior standing which will not be beneficial to you. Best of luck to you regardless which route you take!
