As a freshman, what kinds of courses should i be taking and what courses should i avoid if i want to major in bioengineering and have a better chance of getting into med school

ignore this post, see below :)

Hi, I was in a similar situation as you a few years ago–BME at JHU + PreMed.

Here’s what I took my Freshman year:
Physics w/ Lab
Chemistry w/ Lab
Honors Linear Algebra
Calculus III
Differential Equations
Intro to EE
Digital System Fundamentals
Plastids
JHU Specific BME Modeling and Design
JHU Specific BME Careers
Humanities [Economics]
Programming [Intro Java OR Data Structures]

Now, if you come in with a 4/5 on AP Chem, then you will take Orgo I and II. If you come in with a 4/5 on AP Physics C [both parts], then take more advanced Physics. If you don’t have credit for Calculus I and II, then you know what to do!

For the JHU Specific courses, you can simply take the “intro” courses for BME at your school.

There really aren’t too many courses I’d stay away from, the one that comes to mind is History, or specific English ones that require A LOT of reading outside of class. Your BME courses later on will get intense, so you dont want courses like History eating up your time. However if you think you can handle it, then be my guest

I took the 2 EE courses b/c that is my focus area in BME [Biomedical Instrumentation], you feel free to take w/e your school requires/recommends!

Make sure you get involved in student groups, and try to find research [should be easy for BME’s], and perhaps volunteer.

Good Luck!
