what should i do if i want to transfer into BME for my sophomore year?

right now, im intending to major in Biology.

i realize that transferring into BME at the end of my freshman year is very difficult, but what are some steps i should take?

should i join lots of clubs, talk with the BME professor, etc.? anything will help

thanks

You can’t transfer in unless they announce an opening and don’t count on that happening.

High grades are the only thing that matter.

In the past (I know they took transfer my freshmen year, in May 2006, but I don’t know if they have since then), they’ve looked for strong grades and for students who took the same courses (or similar courses) that a freshmen BME would have taken and I think the majority of people who did transfer in were engineering students.

If you’re really interested in BME and BME-related research, then you should really start off in an engineering program, not the bio department. There are bioengineering tracks in a number of other engineering departments (ChemBE, Material Sciences, MechE, EE etc). Each of these programs offer different “flavors” of biomedical engineering and you might find that you like one of these more than the straight BME program. I really wouldn’t count on the BME program opening up for transfers, since there’s a good chance it won’t happen, and if BME is really what you want to do, then, I again strongly recommend switching your intended major into one of the engineering programs. As a freshmen engineer, you’ll take pretty much the same courses regardless of major - a full year of chemistry, physics and calculus, along with a humanities class or two. Each department will also add its own freshman intro course, but if you do end up transferring into BME, that can be made up later. It’s pretty much impossible to go forth in the BME program without having taken a full year of physics, chemistry and calculus freshmen year because sophomore year puts you into the meat of the BME program that really requires the knowledge from these basic courses.

Hope that helps!
