Can anyone give me a more updated overview of the dorms? I've read some old posts, but I know some renovations have occurred so I just wanted a more updated post about the different dorms. I plan to major in Psychology with a Pre-Med Track. Most important thing for me is to find a dorm which will fit my personality. I am very outgoing, I break dance, and I love to party. Also I do not smoke and drink moderately. I want to be in a dorm which will allow me to meet as many freshmen or people in general, as possible. Thanks let me know!

H-Quad: Corridor Style rooms. Got a general renovation of the carpet, bathrooms, end-hall lounges, dorms this past year so it looks very good. This is were I live. We got the biggest rooms on campus.

Mendelhson Quad: Renovated two years ago. Looks exactly the same as H-Quad. Has the extra positive of being closer to the Union and to the center of Campus. Gray College in Mendy is the closest residence hall to the Academic Mall

Roth Quad: Home to the revamped Roth Pond, Roth Regatta, Roth Dinner (Wendys, Market, California Pizza Kitchen), Roth Forest. It is also the closest quad to the academic buildings located south of the Academic Mall. The SAC is right next to it. I personally dont like the size of the rooms which is the reason why I avoided Roth over the years.

Roosevelt Quad: Corridor style dorms. the Old buildings (wagner, Stimson, Greely, etc) have ugly architecture but are good in the inside. Smaller rooms. Its the infamous part of campus, and most of the “crime” in SB happens in the quad unfortunately. It has the positive of having the newest two residence halls (Lautebeur and Yang College. They are also known as Nobel Halls), contrasting with the older ones, in campus inaugurated this year and have central A/C, awesome Heating, elevators.

Kelly: Also suite style, has the Open-till-late Kelly Dinner where everyone goes to eat at nights. Architecture, unimpressive like Roosevelt and look similar to the housing projects of NYC (LOL) but have great suites and balconies. This quad gets crazy many times and its fun to be here. One of the more fun quads of campus.

Tabler: Has the tabler Arts Center, is more distant to campus. Has very chilled people and the dorms are mostly suite styled. Tabler is very peaceful and for some reason many of the students call the resident of tabler “Hippies”. lol. I used to spend a lot of time skateboarding down the tabler hill in the middle of the quad. One of the things that it sort of uncomfortable is that to enter the Quad from the academic quad you must walk up the “tabler steps”. Tabler is not as close to the center

H-Quad is very social and chilled, same for Mendy but many say that we are the nerds of campus that dont party at all, I’m not sure if that true… Kelly & Roosevelt, West Apartments and the rest of the south part of campus have more of the party people, smokers, drinkers.

If you wonder why i wrote so much. I tried to give out as much detail as possible for other possible prospective students with the similar questions

I’ve lived in Tabler, Roth and West (U3/U4 only). Tabler was easily the most “lively” place out of those three.

This information is great ! but how does sbu place us with roomates that we are copmaitible with? is there some questionnaire we receive later about our habits, etc.?

Responding to you question Janeej2011:

Your QUAD to live on your first year is automatically selected depending on your choice of Residential Undegraduate Colleges (UGCs)

“There are 6 UGCs, each with their own unique theme: Arts, Culture and Humanities (ACH); Global Studies (GLS); Human Development (HDV); Information and Technology Studies (ITS); Leadership and Service (LDS); and Science and Society (SSO).”

The following FAQ from the Stony Brook website hope it helps:

[Stony Brook University Undergraduate Colleges](http://www.stonybrook.edu/ucolleges/about/faq.shtml)

OK NOW I’M CONFUSED. I just received my orientation info, and I was entered into ITS but , I’m a bio major and probably film minor…Does that mean I have to do something info/tech
Related because I’m in that college?!

The undergraduate college is largely unrelated to your major. I was a biology major in LDS, and aside from re class once a week, I never had any involvement in my UG college. They’re largely useless aside from meeting people and organizing the dorming arrangements…just my two cents.

Alrighr, then could someone who lived in mendy give me a bit more information about it so I can decide if id like to switch colleges? Also, a breakdown of which college = which quad would be helpful. The only way I found out ITS is in mendy is bc the website said one of the dudes in ITS college is now the mendy quad director or something. Thanks !
