Hi I’m planning to start community college and then I want to transfer to a university after to complete my bachelors. I’m not sure what program I should choose at Community college . They have given me a GE requirements list for California state university but they said I still have to choose a specific program at the college in order to do those basic GE courses, so I’m confused which program I should choose that is basic so that way I’m not taking extra classes that are for a different career .
What are your interests? All CSU’s admit by major and you need to have some major prep courses completed before transfer. You cannot transfer as Undeclared.
Unless you want to be a science major - you shouldn’t have any trouble filling a semester or two with GE alone. While you are doing that, talk to people in professional careers about their jobs - relatives, friends of parents, etc. that should help you rule some in and out. Investigate clubs on campus, they can also provide some exposure to many different careers. If that fails you, perhaps something pretty general like business - you can specialize as you get further into the program - finance, marketing, operations, technology, etc offer a really diverse set of tasks and skills. And, no matter what you do as a career, you will work for or own a business some day.
Thank you for your help
Yeah I was told by the college counselor that to complete all the GE courses, I have to select some type of major. I wanted to do something which is health and business related. I like the mix of both, I don’t really want direct patient interaction but do want to do something in health. I also have a pharmacy technician diploma but I wanted to do something different and the college also isn’t accepting any of my previous international credits since they were specifically pharmacy related.
I was also interested in Healthcare Management but the college I want to go to doesn’t offer that program , it is only a bachelors program at universities. So I don’t know what major I should select that can be transferable to that program.
most of the CSUs give you the chance to build your own major. I’d be shocked if you couldn’t piece together a Healthcare Management specialization in the Business department at one of the larger campuses like SDSU, Sac, Long Beach or SF
I’d make an appointment with someone in Bus Major advising at your local CSU as a place to start.
Good luck.
Here are some CSU’s that offer Healthcare Administration/Healthcare Management. Take a look at the required courses and match them to the courses at your community college. As stated by @NCalRent, you could major in Business Administration with an emphasis in Management and take some Healthcare related electives to give you that emphasis.
California State University-East Bay (Hayward, CA)
Programs Offered:
BS - Health Administration
California State University-Long Beach (Long Beach, CA)
Programs Offered:
BS in Health Care Administration
California State University-Los Angeles (Los Angeles, CA)
Programs Offered:
BS - Health Science
California State University-Northridge (Northridge, CA)
Programs Offered:
BS - Health Administration
California State University-San Bernardino (San Bernardino, CA)
Programs Offered:
BS - Health Care Management
Thank you so much guys . That was very helpful and yes that’s what I was planning to do. Do a major in business administration and take some Healthcare electives as well. That way I have knowledge of health and management as well which can be helpful for a b.s in Healthcare management.
