Hi, I'm new to CC, but have found this forum to be extremely useful for SAT prep and cannot thank everyone enough. I am now looking at colleges, and I am unfortunately having a hard time getting a good list together, and I was hoping I could get some help from people who know more about various colleges than I do.

My dream college would have warm/hot weather, have about 5,000-15,000 undergrads, be near/in a city, have great academics (business, engineering, chemistry, political science, and/or economics), and still have a great party scene. If you know of any colleges that match the criteria above (obviously doesn't have to match it all, I'm not under the impression that I will be able to go to my "perfect" school), could you post them? Also, if you or someone you know loves a school similar to one I am describing, could you post why you/they like it so much?

That’s a pretty huge number of colleges given only the criteria you have there. It’d be much more useful if you could post some stats, your home state, and financial need (or anticipated need).

Wow, really fast response. I wasn’t expecting that, thank you. So here is some info about me:

Scores:

SAT: 2200

Math 2: 780

Chemistry: 740

English Literature: 670

English Language and Composition: 5

Chemistry: 5

Next year I will take Calculus BC and Physics C, once again, I will receive the scores after the college process has been completed, but I am just letting you know in case it changes anything.

GPA: Unweighted 3.49. Weighted 3.70

Classes: I have a very rigorous schedule compared to students in my school.

Awards:

Received a Second Place award for outstanding achievement in the American Mathematics Contest 8.

Received a Certificate of Honorable Merit and a Maxima Cum Laude Silver Medal for Outstanding Performance in the National Latin Examination twice

Extra Stuff:

I am a leader of a club, am in student government, and have done a study abroad program. I also write a lot for my school newspaper, and have a summer job (doesn’t pay much, but its work)

I have great relationships with my teachers and have already talked with the teachers who will be writing my recs.

My school is well known

Financial Aid: will not be necessary.

I think that’s everything. Once again, thanks a lot

No, now that you have me thinking about it, I don’t think so. While I love music, I don’t think I’ll be majoring or minoring in it. (I’m thinking about chemistry, engineering, business, economics, or political science). I’ll definitely bring instruments with me to college and I definitely want to continue jamming, but all I need for that are some friends who play. Or even just myself and a backing track. I almost feel like the music of the city is more important than the music the school has to offer me. While obviously the cultural aspect of the city won’t be a deciding factor in my college process, I think the music scene of New Orleans and Nashville was definitly one of the reasons I was drawn to those schools.

Also, my grades don’t follow the conventional upward trend. In 9th grade I got mostly A- and a few B+. In 10th grade my grades dropped a lot and I got mostly B’s, one B- and one A-. Then in 11th grade my grades have gone up again, but not they are not as good as they were in 9th grade. I got two A-, a B+ a B and a B- in 11th grade. I don’t know if colleges are going to see this and not like it.

College of Charleston in SC sounds like a possible fit for you. Take a look at the Common Data Set (Section C) for all the schools you are applying to so you know how your stats compare to kids admitted in the most recent class.

I was just going to suggest C of C mom, nice school. I’ve always liked Elon in NC also. Wake Forest & Davidson are also very good, although perhaps a little too small for OP, & GPA may make admit there tough

Consider as a match/reach, Georgetown in Washington DC. Not a party school but DC is a great city and the winters aren’t terrible. And although the school is Catholic, it’s not intrusive, per non-Christian nephew who attended. Emory would also be worth a look.

West coast is great, unfortunately I really don’t want to go to a school in dc (thank you for the suggestion though) because I live in dc and I am looking for something new.

I can’t believe I forgot to mention this, but my school is very prestigious, and considers all classes as an honors course. (But for some reason, when weighting GPA, they only weight AP’s and courses with advanced or accelerated in the name, even though the school boasts how all classes are honors course difficulty. And colleges know this). Does this help lesson my not-so-great GPA? Also, does this help my app overall, because I consider every other part of my app pretty good. Or am I wrong?
