hi guys im searching for some LACs to consider for ED. im international and very low income, so i need a lot of aid.
scores: 1490 sat (2 years ago tho), sat subject 800 math 2, 760 lit, will take act (estimated 34+)
some of my criteria
interested field: philosophy (must-have course), languages, literature
i love artsy and hippy schools, dont like places where the atmosphere is politically tense (i dont like politics)
safe neighborhood & campus
i dont like hot weather or too much rain
preferably has some exchange/study abroad program
thank you.
If you need a lot of aid, don’t apply anywhere ED. You will need to be able to compare the aid offers.
Look into Kenyon and Vassar. A few of the more artsy NESCACs might also be suitable for you.
In the case of most internationals seeking substantial aid, applying ED is preferable, actually, as finances work differently for international students.
@merc81 thanks, do you know anything about oberlin and skidmore? i quite like skidmore, though oberlin may not give out a lot of aid (that is, not enough for me, im super poor)?
@International95 yeah thats what i figure too. how about EA though? do they give a lot of aid to EA applicants?
@jothehobo : Based on most of your criteria, Oberlin would have been my third recommendation, though I initially withheld it because the school reputedly can be political on a regular basis. The fairly artsy, less political Skidmore would have also followed in terms of a continuation of that short list. Bard, Sarah Lawrence and, if female, Barnard, could be other options, though these schools’ financial aid policies vary considerably. In terms of the afore-referenced NESCACs, look into Connecticut College. Wheaton (MA) could be another possibility.
Most LACs don’t have EA, and from my memory, those that too don’t tend to accept international EA applicants with financial need. Bennington may be an exception.
Look into schools in the central states of America, where fewer international students apply. I’m thinking of Carleton, Macalister and Denison. All are very good schools and can be generous for accomplished international students.
trying looking at colgate u
@katliamom is carleton strong in terms of literature, languages and stuff? i just know that its bio and chem are impressive
if i am not mistaken, mcgill and uoft are the ones strongest in literature and languages.
Berea College https://www.berea.edu/
Wooster has philosophy and ~11% percentage of international students .
Macalester (MN) is generous towards international students. I have heard the same (but only second hand) about Earlham and Clark. Mount Holyoke if you are female. Dickinson might be worth a look as the student body is more heterogenous politically than some others. St. Olaf also has a politically moderate student body.
Mac, St. O, and Dickinson are also known for their study abroad programs.
All this is relative, however. LACs tend to be left leaning as a general rule.
@moneyp you mean uni of toronto?
@jothehobo - yes Carleton is strong in the humanities. (Most LACs are. It’s their specialty.)
@jothehobo - yes u of t is toronto
@katliamom is it artsy or hippy in anyway because i dont want a preppy environment. and whats the social scene like? thanks for your rec
It has the reputation for artsy/hippy/quirky - and academic
