Help with Engineering Schedule

I know I've posted a few times about getting the right math class, but I'm really having a tough time figuring out my schedule. I'm thinking about ORIE, ECE, and CHEME. I talked to the Engineering Advising Office and I could probably get a ton of transfer credit (basically get out of CHEM 2090, 2080, MATH 1920, PHYS 1112, PHYS 2213, and get liberal arts credit). I'm still stuck with FWS until Cornell reviews my credit though.

So right now, I'm debating whether to repeat any classes. The reason I am having so much trouble is because it's been two years since I took a Chemistry class and I forgot a ton of stuff. If I want to be a ChemE, then should I repeat CHEM 2090 and 2080?

ECE requires 2214 so should I repeat 1112 and 2213? I doubt the university I took the physics classes from has the same rigor as Cornell, but they were pretty challenging.

Finally, if I decide to be an ORIE major, then I wouldn't even consider repeating those classes since they wouldn't affect me very much.

Out of the three majors, I am leaning toward ORIE the most right now so I was considering the idea of graduating in 3 years. If I change my mind though, I'm worried that skipping all these courses would hurt me as a CHEME or ECE major. So, advice is appreciated :D. Take the credit or not? Also, If I get out of FWS, what other course should I take?

Possible Schedules:

Repeating CHEM 2090

Repeating PHYS 1112

Not Repeating Anything

It might also help to know that if I drop CHEM 2090 (I’m pre-enrolled because I listed CHEME as a possible major), the advising office said it’d be hard to get back in it. Also, is it hard to get into PHYS 1112 after pre-enrollment (add/drop in August)? Depending on the answer, I might just combine my “Not repeating anything” and “Repeating CHEM 2090” schedule until Add/Drop. Looks like my schedule will let me combine them for now at least, but I’d love some advice on a long term solution

[Combined Schedule](http://cornell.schedulizer.com/schedule/fa2011/?p=&c=%40CHEM%402090%400%40LAB%40407%400%2C%40CHEM%402090%400%40LEC%40001%400%2C%40ENGRI%401101%400%40DIS%40202%400%2C%40ENGRI%401101%400%40LEC%40001%400%2C%40ENGRG%401050%400%40DIS%40204%400%2C%40CS%401112%400%40DIS%40201%400%2C%40CS%401112%400%40LEC%40002%400%2C%40MATH%402930%400%40DIS%40210%400%2C%40MATH%402930%400%40LEC%40001%400%2C%40PE%401300%400%40LEC%40001%400%2C%40MATH%401890%400%40SEM%40101%400&u=UVoDT9sepL)

My advice: Take your AP credit and run. Intro classes in Engineering are never very fun, and there’s review books/textbooks for review if you need it (i.e. MIT OCW/textbooks/etc) - Only a small fraction of the material from PHYS1112/2213/CHEM 2090 are required for future courses.

If you need more classes, try to satisfy another requirement at the mean time. I’d avoid jumping into an upperlevel engineering class immediately. If you have any more questions, just message me.

And lastly, PHYS 1112 and CHEM 2090 are both very big lectures - they shouldn’t be hard to get into.

I also might do ChemE or ORIE, and I’m thinking of copying your combined schedule lol- that’s how close it is to what I had earlier (without the Chem class). If I were you, I’d take the Chem CASE exam to place out of Chem 2080 and not even take a chem class first semester, since your current schedule is over the 18 credit max freshman limit

THANK YOU. I think one of the biggest questions in my mind was how much material from those classes would be used in other classes. I’ll take the credit I get. Seriously, you made this process WAY easier for me.

@WongTongTong
I talked with advising and I probably won’t need to take 2090 or 2080. I didn’t know that freshmen had a cap of 18 hours. Thus, I’m definitely using that schedule without any chem. I guess we’ll have most of our classes together, assuming pre-enrollment works out.

^Lol, looks you’re also RCPRS, guess we’ll be spending a lot of time together…whoever you are. :)

Yeah, lol. I spent a couple of semesters research in a Biology lab. Didn’t really like the experience that much. My postdoc wasn’t that great at teaching and helping me out. I’m hoping I’ll have better luck in an ORIE or Math related lab at Cornell. After looking at the email they sent us a couple of days ago, it really seems RCPRS will do a great job getting us involved with research. Seriously, I can’t wait.

^Also, what exactly is ‘writing in mathematics’? Like what do you do in it

I picked it because it was a TR 8-9:55 class and it’s the only math FWS. I want at least 2 of my days to have 8 am classes too so it seemed like a good idea. Here’s the description:
“Ever wonder how a line can fill a square and how we can count infinities? In this course, we consider these and other mathematical notions. We analyze and practice writing as a means to learning mathematics. We read outstanding texts about the nature of mathematics, such as (but not limited to) Reuben Hersh’s The Mathematical Experience, William Byers’s How Mathematicians Think, and Ivars Peterson’s Mathematical Tourist. We also debate the merits of the research into how mathematicians think and what they do in their profession; occasionally we will invite Cornell faculty to join in our discussions and share their experience of mathematical practice. The assignments will concern well-known mathematical concepts, as well as the relationship between mathematics and language, literature, art, music, and nature.”

After taking 2 years of writing bull**** about English stories, writing bull**** about math seems fun.

in case you choose ECE… there’s no need to take courses fast… take your time, build up your fundamentals, go over materials you thought you learned from high school. Differential equations, calculus, and physics are like mere algebra for us.

Also… you have no idea what courses you will be taking in junior/senior year if you’re going to be an ECE. there’ll be tons of more courses you’ll find necessary in order to specialize in certain fields and I took two more ece courses than what was necessary. on top of that, I had to take 3 more AEP courses for my technical electives because I couldn’t help but notice that certain courses would make me become a better engineer. Same applies for orie. For cheme, there’s not much freedom in your courses… everyone just takes the same course work until senior year.

anyway, have fun in ithaca.

proster- so what classes did you end up signing for/what’s your schedule?

[My schedule so far](http://cornell.schedulizer.com/schedule/fa2011/?p=&c=%40ENGRG%401012%400%40DIS%40201%400%2C%40ENGRG%401093%400%40DIS%40202%400%2C%40PE%401230%400%40LEC%40001%400%2C%40ENGRG%401050%400%40DIS%40204%400%2C%40ENGRI%401101%400%40DIS%40202%400%2C%40ENGRI%401101%400%40LEC%40001%400%2C%40MATH%402930%400%40DIS%40211%400%2C%40MATH%402930%400%40LEC%40001%400%2C%40CS%401112%400%40DIS%40205%400%2C%40CS%401112%400%40LEC%40002%400%2C%40MATH%401890%400%40SEM%40101%400&u=UVoDT9sepL)

This is exactly how it looks like minus the FWS. It looks like crap, but that’s cause I put in two AEWs (The long classes on Monday and Friday). I’ll probably drop out of one or both of them later. I want to add another class, but I don’t know what else to take first semester and I’m afraid of overloading first semester on classes. What’s yours like?

Why didn’t you pick the diffeq that Strogatz teaches??! And I’ll post mine when I get home. I think we have matlab together.

Sent from my iPhone 4 using CC app

I did pick the Strogatz one…Check your time. My schedule clearly says he teaches 11:15-12:05. The 12:20-1:10 one is staff. HURRY AND SWITCH INTO MY DIFF EQ CLASS :). 4 spots left…Also, no Intro to ORIE?
