In Jorge Luis Borges’s Labyrinths, he writes a parable entitled “Borges y yo,” which translates as “Borges and I.” In it, Borges writes about “the other one,” his counterpart, who shares his preference for “hourglasses, maps, eighteenth century typography, the taste of coffee, and the prose of Stevenson,” but is not the same as he. “The other one” is the famous author; “the other one” is the one “things happen to.” He concludes this parable with the line “I do not know which of us has written this page.” Write a page. Who has written it?

so we just write a page about our other self? like if we like rap music, but at the same time we like ray charles and classic music, we would describe that inner closed self of us? Write a page and say who has written it? I HAVE WRITTEN IT! DUH!

ok, the university of chicago's essay prompts are meant to make you think. i don't think that they have any easy answers, or correct ones. what is important is that you address the prompt in the best way you see fit.

in fact, i don't think anyone should tell you how to write this essay or address the prompt at all. how you answer it is perhaps as important as what you say.

First, firebird, are you actually a student applying for college, or are you a grad student at Stanford like you said in the message you sent me to read my essays? That sort of raised a red flag for me.

Also, there have been a ton of threads posted here asking about how to answer a question. I mean, questions are fine, but it seems like people are coming on here trying to find exact answers to the essay questions.

i'm not applying to chicago... i am a grad student... I help students with their essays and this was a concern.

i saw your other posts about you wanting to get into the University of Chicago that were posted about three months ago. how can u be a graduate student if so many of your posts are dealing with you trying to get into the University of Chicago as an undergraduate? your borges y yo post is there cuz u wanted help with the essay question. but anyways, my suggestion for that question is to write what you think the admissions officers would like to hear.

this is a public user for my services... any1 of my customers can use this account so don't trust anything that is said on here. It is better for the students that I work with to use one account so all messages are sent to one user. It's more convenient.

yeah, okay....

"so we just write a page about our other self? like if we like rap music, but at the same time we like ray charles and classic music, we would describe that inner closed self of us?"

We as in we the people who are applying to Chicago.

I would hope that a Stanford grad student -- or an applicant to Chicago -- would be more intelligent than this.

Haha. I just felt sort of uncomfortable about sending this guy my essay, he's a bit on the shady side.

thanks for being so on top of things esentman. much appreciated.

ever heard of turnitin.com.... i don't want my students to get caught... -_- cheating is PROHIBITED!

if u don't have anything nice to say, don't say it.. didn't your mother teach you any manners?
