Hi! I was wondering if anyone has any ideas for ways to get involved with any aspect of film as a high schooler? i live in a non-urban area, so there aren’t any programs or an abundance of opportunities around me. I also really can’t afford any summer programs that are thousands of dollars. I really want to learn about all aspects of film-making as I want to do it for a career. Does anyone have some ideas? Thanks!
What state do you live in? Try these:
- searching for a local film commission
- helping at local film festivals (any level)
- going to local screenwriter meetings
1)If there is no film club at your school, start one. Get together and crew each other’s films. Put out short film contests for your school – give a new topic every two months, then at the end of the year, sponsor a student film festival. Submit your best work to student film contests around the country You don’t need expensive equipment. Today’s smart phones are absolutely good enough to get you started, but your school might have some equipment you could borrow.

Contact your local public access station. They sometimes let students intern there.
-
Do a google search for “production companies” in your local area. There are many of them out there and not all are in urban areas. You might get lucky and find one near by. Then call or just show up and see if they can use you in some way.

There are a ton of youtube videos on film making. Some are better then others.
