My D a junior is looking at colleges. She likes Chem, math and music. She thinks engineering would be a good major. However, she feels that applying to schools for eng. major will limit her chances of getting accepted. Sh is a mess and worrying about this.

SAT- 1700 1st try
GPA 92.1
5/127 class rank
Many EC's
NHS
HOBY Councilor

She will take SAT, ACt and SAT II in April and May.
Will take 4 Ap's next year.
She is a whole year younger in her grade, she just turned 16.
Can you recommend some majors other than eng. majors?
Any advice is much appreciated.

At colleges where one applies to the major or division, transferring into the major or division later after enrolling often means another competitive admissions process.

If she really wants to do engineering (chemical?), she should consider applying as an engineering major.

As far as other majors go, since she is interested in chemistry, math, and music, those are obvious majors to consider. Math has the best job and career prospects of these, if that is the tie-breaker. Math job and career prospects are often in finance and computers, so taking electives in those areas and statistics would be helpful.

At this time D wants to apply for engineering, but looked at all the admission stats for the schools she is interested in and is worried that since the competition is very high, she would get rejected. Not sure how to help her.
I was thinking math pathways. It will take some convincing. Hope she would consider entering undeclared. Thanks for the feedback.

She will need to bring her SAT score up to be competitive. She should apply for engineering, and if the school thinks she can’t handle it, they may accept her into their arts and sciences school. It’s a lot easier to transfer out of engineering, than it is to transfer into engineering. In my experience, applying with a declared engineering major did not limit my D’s acceptances.
