Hi.
I am applying early decision to CALS, and i have bascially restarted my supplement 20+ times.
I have all day today, tomorrow, and Saturday to work on an introduction, i am absolutely in love with the rest of my essay (i basically just talk about my scientific research and how it is specific to my major).
I just do not know where to begin… i am not the type of person that can write BS like “after watching my beautiful grandmother tending her garden, i knew i had a passion for the environment.” i just can’t. My writing tends to be more colloquial and in a way more personal/sincere
Any tips for starting my essay? I was thinking about talking about my veganism (i am applying to environmental/sustainability sciences) and ahisma but i’m not sure if that is way out there.
ALSO, the prompt this year doens’t really ask about Cornell specifically? It asks about my interests and experiences and how that relates to my selected major, should i try to be specific about Cornell?
Thanks
Can’t help you with where to begin, but yes, try to weave in specifics about Cornell’s program you are applying to. They should know you’ve done your research and why Cornell over some other institution.
“scientific research is a generic topic”…What does that mean?
There are millions of things that “scientific research” could pretty, and i am pretty sure my research and awards are unique (as in no other applying Senior has done it-therefor not generic) and qualify my as an ESS major. All of my research (for the past 5+ years) has a focus on biodiversity conservation
@applicantcor Ouch! That burned! Your research in biodiversity conservation certainly is unique, and colleges definitely find high leveled research impressive. However, make sure you discuss WHY and also discuss the major as a whole, not just biodiversity conservation.
@PaulDi agreed. I actually finished my supplement and gave it to a CALS student to review. He said it wasn’t over the top and showed them something they couldn’t find in my application, he thinks i have a good shot of getting in.
@applicantcor, with all due respect, a CALS student is not a adcom and knows not in the least bit if you do or don’t have a good chance of being admitted. Trust in yourself and hopefully you let your passion shine through in your essay that will lend the adcoms to think you will be a good fit for their program.
