Hello, I graduated from high school in May and now I attend East Los Angeles College. I plan of being a full time student and just for the record a passed my Spanish Language Placement Exam with a 4. Anyhow, I decided to get a head start take the summer semester in which I was a full time student (6 units for the summer). I finished both of my classes with A's so I am quite happy with my start . I already figured out what I want to major in which is Broadcast Journalism. I want to transfer to USC because USC Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism is excellent for my major and also all the aid that USC offers for their students in school and once they graduate. So here is where I am really confused! In the USC website it says that you need 64 units in order to transfer but then I read how you don't need a certain number of units. Since I want transfer and major in journalism, USC Annenberg only takes no more than 36 transferable units. Does that mean I only need to get 36 units in order to transfer from ELAC to USC? Does that mean I should transfer as a sophomore? I am sure I might have read these stuff wrong but I really would want to hear an answer from someone who transferred from CC to USC. And if you went to a CC first and then transferred to USC A.S.C.J. that would really help to. I really would love to transfer in less than two years because I would love to get started on my Broadcast Journalism study/career earlier and also have to chance to explore another major and minor. BTW I would like to add that my High school grades and GPA were not the greatest and I also did not take the SAT. Thanks again for all the help and please be as informative as you can!

@entomom Yes I have reviewed both links and I am still confused. I guess the confusion comes from the webpage of Annenberg that talks about transfer students should have not more than 36 transferable units if majoring in journalism and the main page talking about transfer students should have no more than 64 units.

As an Annenberg transfer student, I can say that they would prefer that you get as most GE units out of the way as possible - especially the foreign language requirement. Keep in mind that that two of the USC GEs (IV and VI) are non-transferrable, but if your school has an articulation agreement with USC, I’d figure out what would transfer over.

Most Annenberg students take the first module (they will put required courses for your major in pairs) their sophomore year. You don’t want to be too far behind or else it will extend your development plan (due to the way courses are paired and the order in which you can register for electives, most junior-level students are stuck with sticking around for an extra semester). Good luck!

@RandomNewGuy So you’re suggesting I should try to transfer as a sophomore in order to be at the same level as the other students at Anneberg majoring in journalism? And the thing is I would most likely be done with the courses listed in the USC articulation webpage for students majoring in broadcast journalism by next sprint or summer at East Los Angeles College. Sorry for being co fused about this whole thing luckily you guys are helpful!

If you can do the transferrable GEs and foreign language requirement in three semesters, I’d definitely recommend trying to transfer in as a sophomore rather than aiming for the maximum of 62 units (and junior status).

The reality is that you have to complete 64 units at USC to graduate anyway, but Annenberg won’t let you take upper-level journalism electives concurrently with upper-divison courses.

It’s not a big deal if you don’t mind staying an extra semester. Most of us transfer students are all in the five-semester boat anyway.

@RandomNewGuy Well if I apply for sophomore year (deadline February 1) the only GE’s requirements for Annenberg I will have done are: Foreign language since I received a 4 on my Spanish Language AP Exam, Chicano studies which covers the Diversity requirement, and Anthropology which covers Global Cultures and Traditions. It wont be until spring semester in which I finish the remainder of the other GE’s which are English, Math, Scientific Inquiry (either taking Earth Science or Chem), and Western Cultures and Traditions. So I feel applying for next year my chances will be low because it wont be till spring when I start taking the main requirements. That’s why I really hope in the application it ask about courses that will be taken during spring or have a spring grade request which would greatly increase my chances.

Yeah, the Common App will ask you what courses you are taking spring semester and that will definitely be taken into consideration. It’s a tough call, but if the effort is there, your letters of recommendation are great, you nail the essay (and the supplemental) and you give them every reason to admit you, then it’s out of your hands. Just do what’s in your power.

@RandomNewGuy Thanks again for all the advice for the wise words too! Now I hope these are the last questions I ask and they’re are really important too since I might want to transfer as a sophomore. Do I need to create a common app account now if I plan on transferring as a sophomore? And I should get started on my essay as soon as possible like now? And if I were to trasnfer as a sophomore (which I hope I do!) should I apply to receive scholarships? In the case of scholarships would USC even let me apply if I am still a student at East Los Angeles College?
