help! word count!

<p>I've cut down the essay I'm hoping to use in varied forms for a few of my applications, but I have a problem. Two in particular, namely Yale and Brown, specifically say "500 words maximum" in different words. Right now I've got 625 words, and I cut that down from around 700.</p>

<p>So do I need to keep going? So much seems important. Presumably I'll be able to cut it down after getting away from the process for a while to gain perspective, but I'd like your input.</p>

<p>What's the reality?</p>

<p>People have told me that upto 100 words over the limit is okay.</p>

<p>It depends on which school you are applying to... State schools are very strict whereas top schools are very flexible...</p>
