Okay so when colleges say "Please answer each question in approximately 750 words", how many words over 750 do you think is fine? Like what do you think is the maximum limit for it to still be fine?

I'm currently trying to trim each essay down to 800 words. The first one was 1000 words but I have it down at 840, and the other one was 1100 words, but I have it at 950 words. Its so hard because I feel like I've already cut out and trimmed it down as much as possible.

I’d say 50 words over is probably fine. Anything more than that, and well… those admissions officers might get… um… how should I put this… annoyed.

If worst comes to worst, try to chip off some fancy adjectives. Intro paragraphs are also often more bulky than they should be.

You dont want it to be longer. That’s part of following the directions.

Yea I’ve tried to take off that “fluff wording” (aka the fancy adjectives and unnecessary words), and I’ve trimmed my intro down as much as possible. I think I chose a slightly broad topic, but I don’t really have time to choose new ones since the deadline is soon.

One rule of thumb I’ve heard (from friends) is the “10% rule” where you can go 10% over or under the word requirement but still be fine. But idk here…I’m afraid 75 words over might be too much

Want me to take a look at it? You can trust me; I already submitted all my apps except my Yale application which I plan to submit next week.

Alright, I’ll PM them to you.
