Help!!!

I could really use some advice.

Right now I attend UMass-Amherst as an in-state student, with free tuition and a huge room to myself (I'm an RA) which is also free. My family basically pays for food and fees, coming to about $10,000 at the absolute most a year. My family's EFC is about $20,000, but that's not really realistically affordable considering they saved nothing for me to go to school. I work during the summer and winter breaks and make good money ($12/hr) and I receive about $60/week during the school year as part of my RA job package.

Since I originally came here, I wanted to transfer - I didn't want to come here to begin with. I have a 3.8 GPA right now, in the honors college, and in addition to my job as an RA I'm also the vice president of a coed community service fraternity. Supposedly UMass' business school is a good program, which I'm in for Finance and possibly a double major with Economics. The places I'm considering for transfer are Cornell, NYU-Stern, BC, and Fordham as a safety/maybe merit aid (got in there out of high school).

I'm not really happy at UMass at all, but it's hard to ignore the financial benefits and the fact that at this point I could cruise with 12-13/credits a semester till I graduate is a little appealing. Should I stick it out another two years at UMass (I'm a sophomore now) or still aim to transfer? Is it really important to have an undergrad degree from a more prestigious place? Help!

Hey there, I go to UMass-Amherst as well and am also looking to transfer. "Since I originally came here, I wanted to transfer. I didn't want to come here in the first place" - hey, we're in the same boat on that one too.

In the end, I think it comes down to whether or not you're actually willing to be unhappy for another two years. As finances go, yeah UMass is obviously going to be less expensive, but at this point you've already done two years there, so you'd only be paying for two years at a costly school. I suppose in my mind, it's worth it to try to transfer to a school at which you'd be happier. You have a good GPA, and yeah, the business program at UMass is supposed to be excellent, so I'm sure that will only help you in your transferring purposes.

If you do decide to transfer, let me know how you make out. :)

** side note: have you also noticed that it's hard to find people at umass who dont absolutely LOVE it there? sheesh
