That wasn't much of much help actually .... could you really say what my chances are at Brown?? Come on ... Brown people aren't so lazy!!!

haha, it's not that we're lazy, kiddo, we just realize we aren't admissions gods, and therefore don't have the answers you're looking for.

that said, i realize that people post these threads when they are anxious and desperate and looking for some semblance of consolation. So, I'll tell you that you look like you have a pretty good chance, so do your best, apply, and see. As for financial aid, it is my understanding that Brown is stingy for internationals, but it is still need based so if you REALLY need it, you are more likely to get it.

I've heard that the aid is alright once you've been accepted, but remember that Brown is not need-blind for internationals, so if you need aid you'll have a harder time getting in.

OK ... Thanks!!! So hows the neuroscience+computers program in Brown? does a great research in that field as an added part to the Application help really??? And I really really really need aid ... can't even pay as much as 4000$ dollars ... and how's the job chances after Brown?? Do people get in Google, Apple???

they can get jobs pretty easily I think, Brown CS is really good. Why can't you pay $4000? You can get loans to cover the costs like most other people do.

Simple ... bcoz we are poor ... thats why my ECs are not much outdoorsy bcoz i cudnt afford to go ... mostly it is my home-based research ... the time i spent at home caring for my dad who is ill .... will i mention that?? will they understand why my ECs are pretty research based and why i cannot pay??? PLEASE REPLY!!!!

They will factor in your dad if you tell them and supply the necessary documents.

Being poor is no excuse for not being able to pay anything for college. It's an investment you'll get a return on. I wouldn't put myself into hundreds of thousands of dollars of debt but a few 10's of thousands is not that bad if that's what you end up with.

It works like this:

1 I'm poor. How do I change this fact? Go to college perhaps?

2 I'm in debt from college. How to I change this fact? Get a better paying job with degree attained from said college.

3 Repay loans from college with money earned from said job.

Pretty simple.

To repeat what benjaminx said -- Brown is not need blind for internationals. That means that the decision to accept you will take your financial need into account. If accepted you'll get aid -- but no matter how good your application is if Brown exceeds its financial aid budget or feels you are too expensive, you won't get accepted.

There were several international students who posted on CC this year who did not get into any schools at all, and they all needed a lot of financial aid. There are US schools that are need-blind for internationals, and I strongly suggest that you do the research, figure out which ones those are and apply to several of these.

You should still apply to Brown if it is a good fit for you, but make sure that you apply to some need-blind schools as well.

As for your chances -- since you are an international student who needs financial aid, I'd say less than 13%. Only the admissions office knows for sure.

Thanks everybody!!! i get the idea .... I will be applying to Brown nonetheless but I will keep it mind that in all probability I wouldn't be able to go .....
I will apply ED to Dartmouth ... that school fits me a lot and its Neuro+Computer Program is also very competent ... what say???
Other schools ----
Amherst
Middlebury
MIT
Stanford
Williams
Vanderbilt
Carleton (I heard its Computer Program is pretty nice)

What do u people think abt my choices??? Please reply!!

Carnegie-Mellon is good for CS.

Carnegie Mellon doesn't give money ..... please advice on the above choices plzzzz!!!

You've figured out the schools that are need-blind for internationals, which is good. However, your list is heavy on reaches. You need to add some matches and safeties. Look for schools that have a lot of merit aid. (there are threads elsewhere on CC that discuss merit aid in depth, including giving names of schools that are very generous.) There is a good chance you could be denied admission at all of those schools, just because the acceptance rate at all of them is very low.

Your best bet is finding schools very interested in increasing their international students that give merit awards. I don't know any, but I'm sure if you spend enough time doing the research, you should uncover them. These may not be "name brand" prestigious schools; they may be small LAC i the midwest. But if you are determined to come to the US, then I suggest you take this route.

Thanks!!! I will do my research ... in the meantime if anybody does come up with such a generous school please let me know .... i know Dickinson College .. what say???

Yes! I'm an international student class of 2012 with FULL financial aid...If you love Brown and really want to apply, go for it!
