Help?

Okay, here is my situation- I was kicked out of my house (long story, abusive family) mid way through junior year in highschool. Despite that, in 2008 I graduated along with my class and only in the past few months have I had things stable enough to think about getting to college (though, I am still technically homeless).

Here's the thing- While everyone else was getting swept up in colleges and applications and financial aid- I was busy just trying to figure out how to survive the next week; I'm really at a lose as to what I need to do to get into college. So I need someone to tell me about how this whole process works- What do i need to do, who should i talk to,
what papers to file, what to say/ask for, etc.
Should I reveal that I'm homeless? Or that the last year and a half of high school I was homeless?
Are there any programs available to a homeless person to help them through/get into college?
I've been out of school for the last 18 months, but I haven't been idle. What kind of reactions can I expect from this?

If it matters, I have my eyes set on evergreen state college in Olympia, Washington.

thanks

Hi, mixed,

My hat is off to you for getting through some tough times, and wanting to proceed with higher education. You should feel proud.

I’m going to ask a few questions, just so we can get a better picture of your situation. You don’t have to answer them, but be aware of them:

1) Do you have a place where you are staying, or a place where you can get mail?
2) Are you a resident of Washington (to get the in-state tuition break)?
3) Do you have in mind what subject you would like to study?
4) Are you financially independent from your parents/guardians? (this is for financial aid purposes)

I did a quick search, and here are a few websites that may help:
[FinAid | Calculators | Dependency Status](Dependency Overrides - Finaid)
[NAEHCY - About the LeTendre Education Fund](http://www.naehcy.org/letendre_ab.html)

If you do have a temporary place to live and a source of income you may want to consider taking a few classes in your local community college for the fall semester. In the meantime, try to get an appointment with an admissions counselor at Evergreen and explain your situation. They may have a program in place for students in your situation. (someone please correct me if I am wrong on this one).

If I think of anything else, I’ll post. Best of luck!

I’m also going to suggest that you post this question on the parents forum. You may get more replies there.
