Help?

Okay, here is my situation- I was kicked out of my house (long story, abusive family) mid way through junior year in highschool. Despite that, in 2008 I graduated along with my class and only in the past few months have I had things stable enough to think about getting to college (though, I am still technically homeless).

Here's the thing- While everyone else was getting swept up in colleges and applications and financial aid- I was busy just trying to figure out how to survive the next week; I'm really at a lose as to what I need to do to get into college. So I need someone to tell me about how this whole process works- What do i need to do, who should i talk to,
what papers to file, what to say/ask for, etc.
Should I reveal that I'm homeless? Or that the last year and a half of high school I was homeless?
Are there any programs available to a homeless person to help them through/get into college?
I've been out of school for the last 18 months, but I haven't been idle. What kind of reactions can I expect from this?

If it matters, I have my eyes set on evergreen state college in Olympia, Washington.

thanks

Consider approaching your high school guidance counselor for advice–they know you and they know the process. Did you take the SAT or ACT yet?

If you tell your story in an appealing way, it may help you–you are certainly not just another affluent kid who has had it easy.

Consider taking some community college classes this Fall to show you are serious about college and perhaps rack up some good grades. The community college might also help with Evergreen.

I’m not sure I have good advice to give you – but I might start by contacting the admissions department at Evergreen State and talking to a counselor there if at all possible. They can help you get through their process, and advise you about special programs or opportunities they may have given your circumstances. Can your high school guidance counselor also be of help to you? I would hope they could be a resource even if you have been out of school for a while.

I agree about contacting Evergreen. You also need to speak to them very frankly about your financial situation.

I wish you the very best of luck. Let us know what they say!

Since Evergreen is the goal, I would, if possible, talk to the high school counselor first, to get his or her advice about how to approach Evergreen

Hi, mixed, I’m glad you posted here.

I’ve done a little more searching, and I found this site. While it isn’t the college you are looking at, it gives information about how this college views homeless students. It has financial aid suggestions, as well as some helpful links:
