Anything will help me please..my parents wont let me do anything to research so I need all help I can get

Financial aid is based on family income and assets.

Most schools don’t have much to give.

You need to run some net price calculators on the websites, and make sure you put in accurate info. that said, the NPCs are just estimates…not guarantees.

If the PA schools will be publics, then you can’t expect much need-based aid.

What schools are you considering?

Scholarships are often based on academic achievement…GPA and Test scores.

We need more info…

Well I am going to go to Kutztown University of Pennsylvania in the fall of 2012. I scored a 1440 on my SAT test and have a 3.1 GPA. I am rank 119/ 260 on my graduating class. The problem I have is mainly my parents have no clue what to do and I haven’t been in school for the past two weeks to ask my guidance counselor questions(ACL surgery)…my family only made $28,000 last year cause my dads only working. I have two siblings and mother doesn’t work. I have a job and am going to start saving ASAP…I just started workinf btw

Did you apply for financial aid when you applied for admission?

Have you been admitted, and if so, what financial aid were you offered?

With your family income, you need either a huge financial aid package (something along the lines of a full-ride), or you need to choose a very inexpensive school that you can commute to.

Well I just am waiting for my sat scores to go through which takes about 1-3 weeks. Kutztown for out of state is about $18,000 total for everything including room and board and tuition and meal plans.

Go to the university’s net price calculator and put in the info.

[VSA Cost Estimator](http://www.collegeportraits.org/PA/KU/estimator/agree)

Since you’re out of state for this school, the only aid you might get is a Pell grant (up to 5500) and a student loan (5500). But, the school costs about $28k per year. :(

You must have looked at the instate prices…the out of state prices are much higher

Out-of-state tuition and fees: $17,719
Room and board: …$8,536
Books and supplies: …$1,100
Estimated personal expenses: $2,600

this school may not be affordable.

Go to actual Kutztown site it’s not 28k lol

Tuition $3,120.00 $7,800.00 Activity Fee $117.50 $117.50 Student Union Fee $186.00 $186.00 Health Center Fee $108.00 $108.00 Instructional Service Fee $312.00 $312.00 Instructional Technology Fee $174.00 $263.00 Transportation Fee $35.00 $35.00 Rec Center Fee $127.00 $127.00 Total -Commuting Students $4,179.50 $8,948.50 first time students have an additional $108.00 in fees see below Academic Records and Activity Fees Residence Halls -average $2,640.00 * $2,640.00 * range 2,288 -4,500 14 Meal Plan (Premium) $1,375.00 $1,375.00 Total -On-campus Students $8,194.50 $12,963.50

The first price is in state…second is outta state

Before you lol at me…you need to look more closely at the website…those prices are per semester, not per year.

those are the prices for SPRING semester…ONE semester.

[Bursar’s Office - Undergraduate Tuition and Fees](http://www.kutztown.edu/admin/bursar/tuition-ug.asp)

For this CURRENT school year, it’s $13k per semester …which is $26k per year. Next year the costs will be higher…and then so forth.

And I apply for financial aid every semester…tht I did I ask my counselor

NO, you don’t apply every semester. You apply for a school YEAR. You apply ONCE a year.

Your aid award will be the entire year…then split in half for each semester. So, if you got a full Pell Grant and Stafford loan, then that 11,000 would get split in half for each semester.

And, as you can now see, the price is much higher than you thought. That price was for ONE semester…not for the school year.

Put in the effect of scholarships and other types of federal aid, not just the Pell Grant. And also student loans will help

You need to look at this realistically…your aid package will likely be…

Pell Grant up to 5550 per YEAR (that is federal aid)
Stafford loans…5500 per year…(that is federal aid)
Perkins loan …maybe 1500 per year (that is federal aid)
SEOG…maybe get this…maybe 500 per year? who knows (fed aid)

Work study…maybe 2000 per year…you’ll get this in paychecks throughout the year.

So…you’d get about $15k in aid for a school that costs about $27-28k per year.

My families financial status is this… dad works and makes 13.50 an hour…mom doesn’t work period…zilch…I work and make $7.25 an hour…maybe 2 times a week…we are poor…last year dad made $28,000 a year…we can get aid

You don’t get it.

that school is an OOS public. They need to help their instate kids…and very likely they can’t meet need for instate kids either… They charge high OOS costs for a reason. They’re not just going to cover it with need-based aid. Why the heck would they charge high rates if they’re just going to have to dole out aid to cover the costs???

You said that you wanted help. Now, I could just lie to you and say that Kutztown is going to make themselves affordable to an OOS kid, but chances are they’re not. They don’t meet need…especially for OOS kids.

I respect you for this and thank you now may I ask about Frostburg State…instate and in Maryland

djackson, Frostburg is probably a good choice. Not only will the price be lower for a public college instate but there is aid that the state of Maryland gives to college students who attend schools in the state.

What I saw is total tuition and fees for the year $7128, dorm room about $3600, food about $4,000., so your total expenses next year would be about $15K a year plus books and transportation. (It may be a bit higher than that because fees usually go up every year.)

I just noticed that you are interested in studying elementary education. If you want to be a teacher, you are better off studying in the state where you want to teach. Also, there is no reason to go to an expensive school. Apply to some instates where you are likely to get in and also consider applying to your local community college because that would be even less expensive.

If I apply within this week is there still a good chance I could get in?

If their deadline hasn’t passed, send it in. Do you have application waivers?

2college is absolutely right. If you want to be a teacher, then going instate has significant advantages.

PLUS…and this is big for you, the total cost is lower AND you’d be given state aid (which you wouldn’t get if you went OOS.)

If you want to be a teacher, then minimizing loans is a good idea. Newish teachers don’t make a lot, so you’re not going to want to have to pay rent, utilities, car costs, food, etc…and make a bunch of payments on student loans.
