So I'm on a mac and I wrote my main Common App essay in Word 2008 but I kept the default font 'Cambria', and as the instructions said, I uploaded it with the extension showing (i.e. essayname.docx). I remember clearly when I submitted my application to Stanford (my first school) the essay showed up, but now, when I click 'View Document' it just has two blank pages where the text is supposed to be!!!!! Apparently it's supposed to be in font 'Times New Roman.' And it won't let me upload a new one, I'd have to create a whole new application and everything, and if I do that I have to delete UPenn from my current one which would lose all my work in the supplement. What do I do!! I can't contact the office as they're closed till the 5th!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AAARRRGGGHHHHHH!!

Please tell me what I'm supposed to do now.

Actually I just checked it on my sister's computer (a PC) in Firefox, and it loaded fine so I'm not [as] worried anymore. I just don't know why it won't show up on my Mac when every other dang essay shows up.

Uploading .docx to common app isn't supported. Try doing a Save As... > and change the filetype to "Word 97-2000 document" or whatever, (but .doc) and you shouldn't have an issue. (Or you could just save it as a PDF and upload that day -- which is what I did.

glad you figured it out, but for all others who have problems online, you can always send it in on paper and call the college to explain your problems. for some reason my teachers who wrote my recomendation letters couldn't load them online, so instead of trying to figure it out i just sent them in my snail mail

haha i had a sort of similar thing happen-- christmas day my hard drive crashed and i had the common app essay and the cornell and penn supplemental essays on it... and i didn't back it up! so i had to write 3 essays over in like a week. arrggghh! but now i'm done... and all essayed out. glad to hear you got it figured out tho

Macs do not suck. You are using the default “Cambria” font which will not show up on the Common app view document. You have to use “Arial” font and it will show up. It is not about the computer, it is about the font.

lol
Just install Adobe Reader. I had to do that too and now it shows up. Common app uses windows based software and they can care less about the mac lol
