Carolyn (We <3 u!) suggests that I post this same thread on the Parent Forum and see if I get any different responses. So here it goes:

As many of the people on CC know, I got rejected from 5 of my top schools, WL at my #1 Kenyon and Tulane, and accepted at American and SCU with no money. That leaves me with Rutgers U, my state school. I was a LAC. I am not happy with going to Rutgers, knowing its size etc. I looked in Nacac.com and Hendrix College has openings. I am applying right now. I was wondering what anyone knew about the school. Any alumnis? Anyone attending next year? Any info on its strong points, area, fin. aid, social life, student body, etc? Kenyon said they met their quota and unless someone leaves, they will not be accepting off the WL. Is Hendrix anything like Kenyon? Is it a "prestigious" college considering I don't really hear much about it in NJ. Please help me if you can give me any information! I think it may be a fit for me. I like languages, want to study abroad, very liberal, like to party etc. What do you think?

I honestly don't know if Kenyon is anything like Hendrix, but Hendrix does have a very good reputation as a LAC. Somewhat surprisingly for its location, it also has the reputation of being pretty liberal. I believe that it was one of Loren Pope's "Colleges that Change Lives", so if you can get a copy of the book to read his profile, that would be helpful (he's a little too gushing sometimes, but overall gives good info). You might also check out the www.ctcl.com website. Finally, I know that the CTCL group is in the middle of a traveling roadshow (more info on their website) that will be coming to New York and Philadelphia next week. If you could make it, that might give you a chance to talk in more detail with an admissions rep.

Good luck! I know you're very disappointed but I am positive that with your good attitude and record things will be fine.

This was Curmudgeon's quick overview of Hendrix from a visit with his D. I don't think he'll mind that I cut and pasted it.

Hendrix is a true anomaly. A private college in Conway, Arkansas ,a half-hour from Little Rock. Pretty much in the center of town. A campus that I like with defined borders and attractive matching structures in a dark brown brick (as I recall). The student body is the kicker. Every liberal kid in Arkansas must go there making up 50% ,plus another 25% of the student body is from Texas, leaving another 25% scattered. We saw several states repped in the parking spaces. Picture Volvo's with ski racks used as a canoe holder. Crunchy-er than you could imagine from looking at a map.

D is not turned off by anything we saw EXCEPT that 75% are from Arkansas or Texas. (Don't ask me,I'm not picking.) The students were bright and engaged. The programs were thought provoking for freshmen with some frivolity thrown in (always a nice touch). Great rep and wonderful starting price and merit aid. I would suggest for a Western, Northern or NorthEastern kid with good stats -this school may be one of your better choices. I do get the feeling from the adcoms that they want a class profile more national than they have. If you can help them achieve that, I bet they'll treat you well.

BTW: "Crunchy-er" refers to granola-eating students. I'm very proud of myself because I figured that out.

Doddsdad, You crack me up! :)

Valuable, I think I mentioned on the other thead that my daughter has Hendrix on her list for next year, partially based on Curmudgeon's experience. I did a search of the archives for you because I remember that there were several posts from people last year who visited Hendrix and were surprised by how much they liked it, but the archives don't go back far enough to pull those posts up. What I do remember, is that recently another Mom here on this board who lives in the South, told me that a kid from her son's high school went to Hendrix and decided that he would only wear kilts. This was not considered as outlandish behavior by the Hendrix student body. When my daughter and I were visiting Earlham, there was a senior from NY on the tour with us who was trying to decide between Hendrix and Earlham and was revisiting both schools.
She said she preferred Hendrix's location just a bit because it was closer to Little Rock, which she thought was a cool city. Daughter asked her what Arkansas was like and she said it was much nicer and prettier than she had expected. At that point, our tour guide piped up and said he had two friends at Hendrix and had visited them a few times. He was from New Hampshire. I can't remember his exact words but basically he indicated that Hendrix and Earlham were very similar in that their student bodies were both welcoming, tolerant of individual quirks, and pretty cool places.

If you march to the beat of your own drum, which I think you do from what I know of you, I think Hendrix will be a nice fit for you. I would encourage you to call the admissions rep for your state, if you haven't already, and introduce yourself as well. That could make a difference. Good luck - please let us know what you decide.

Valuable, There are two girls who are headed for Hendrix next fall on the individual schools thread (see link below). They have both visited. You might either email them or PM them directly and ask for them impressions.

The more I inquire about Hendrix, the more I like it! I just talked to about 10 different students on Myspace and the responses are just wonderful! It sounds actually pretty exciting. Although my mother is a city person (born and raised in Philly), my dad is a bit on the "country" side and nothing would make him happier then sending his little girl to Little Rock lol. They said I should hear from them as soon as they get my transcript and scores. Although Kenyon is a slim chance, I received a letter from my rep. today and she had very good things to say concerning my character and that she hopes I will be "an addition" to the college if they can offer me a spot. It sounds like she likes me a lot, but its a matter of spaces. Who knows where I will end up. Arkansas doesn't seem too bad and I am sure that a little country living wouldnt hurt me for 4 years. The academics seem solid and the students are nice, its just hard convincing people in suburban cherry hill that there is a awesome school in AR waiting for me! Thanks for all the posts, I appreciate it and I will update you as soon as I have more information!

Hi valuable! I am impressed that Carolyn remembers about the kid at my S's school who attends Hendrox and wears only kilts! His family is very liberal in leanings. This student could have gone anywhere on the Tuition Exchange (his dad is a prof at the local LAC) and chose Hendrix. There are presently two other students there from this little town, and though they are very different, (one moderate in appearance and attitude, and the other fairly flamboyant, a talented actor and singer) all three have been having a wonderful expereince. Out S2 is considering Hendrix for the year following this one. Let us know what else you learn!

valuable1212, Drew is near Rutgers and has openings. Look at Willamette and Goucher too.

im fairly confident that if kenyon doesnt work out that I will attend Hendrix. I find out about my acceptance this week, and I am feeling pretty good about my chances. The rep seemed to give me the notion that my stats are good and that they have room to accomodate me along with fin.aid. Plus, they said that me being from NJ is a huge plus. I am excited about AR. I wish more people in my school felt the same way. Hard to convince urban NJ kids that you will end up near Little Rock!

Valuable, take a look at Goucher as well. They still have openings and it is a good LAC. I was impressed with what I saw there when I visited with a friend a couple of months ago. The problem with looking at openings this late is the financial aid issue. You should ask about what the availability of aid is at this date, as you already have some options that have not given you aid. No need to add more schools to that category.

i just got an email and I got accepted at Hendrix! WOOHOO! now for the fin. aid package!!! :)

YEA!!!! Way to go!

V1212, really good job. Way to stay positive!! I'm excited for you. Hendrix is a pretty cool place to be.

Valuable, congratulations. I KNEW they'd love you at Hendrix. Keeping my fingers crossed for the financial aid package you desire. Let us know how it goes!

Hooray!!! Yippee!!! CONGRATULATIONS!!! Massive smilies! :D

Congratulations, Valuable1212 - I hope the finaid package is just what you need!

I was excited reading this. I've always heard nice things about Hendrix.

I also used to recruit in Arkansas, and couldn't believe how nice the state looked once you got off the interstate. The stretch from Little Rock to Texarkana doesn't look like much, but just a few miles from the interstate you understand why it's The Natural State.

Congratulations Valuable! I agree with your Kenyon rep. I'm impressed with your character as well.

Thanks everybody for the support and kind words...I just got even better news just now and of course, CC is the first place I run to (well after my mom lol)....I just got word from my rep Jack Frost (Yes! thats his name lol)that I will receive an academic scholarship for $6,000/yr and the Odyssey Award for $3,000/yr. This is soley merit and does not include my grants, fin. loans, etc! Just thought I would share the good news. Even though I am not accepted at Kenyon, the money is something to think about if they do take me off the WL. With Kenyon being 40,000 a yr, and Hendrix being 27,000 (actually 18,000 with the scholarships!) it would be hard to turn it away! Of course, Kenyon is still very much my first choice..but only if the money works out. I will keep posting since I am suppose to hear from Kenyon during the week of the 23rd. Again, thanks for all the information and help!

Valuable, Good for you! I think it's great that Hendrix may work out well for you! My daughter investigated it and I think the pre-professional programs are some of the best in the country. My D opted for somewhere else, but I still have good thoughts about Hendrix. Did you know that there is an elephant sanctuary very close to campus, and that there are some research projects done there with Hendrix students? My youngest D is an elephant fanatic, so I think that's where she'll end up in another 7 years.
