Heres $$ for CC transfer students - even for OOS students.

BTW...if anyone knows of other such scholarships, please post below for other parents or students to review for their needs.... :)

While researching some scholarship $ for another poster who is currently at a CC, I found this and thought I'd share with others who might have the same need. It's often very hard for CC students to get any merit $ when transferring to a 4 year University. So, I was happy to find these below listed scholarships

Please, note...
1) that some scholarships can be stacked and some cannot be stacked.
2) that only some scholarships are available for OOS students.
3) Miss State is kind of "first come/first serve" when it comes to scholarship apps, so the earlier you apply, the better your chances.

FYI...Mississippi State is the flagship of the state.

I have never been on the Miss St campus (I will be there in Nov), but several friends' kids go there and really like it. The campus is lovely, the architecture is classic red brick/columns type, and there are many very strong programs there, such as engineering, pre-health, pre-vet (it has the vet school), math and sciences. It probably has a good business school, too, but I'm not familiar with that (yet). LOL

There are a lot of different schools that offer scholarships from Phi Theta Kappa, so if a student is in PTK that is definitely an avenue to search. I was offered membership but couldn’t afford to join.

What is Phi Theta Kappa??? And how does one join? And how much does it cost to join?

Frankly, I think at least getting the OOS fees waived by Miss ST is a huge plus since their in-state rate is sooo cheap…about $5k per year.

It is an honor society for two year colleges, it’s massive and I am sure has a website. At my school you needed a 3.5 to be eligible to join. There are two types of membership, general and par excellence. I am saying this from memory from last winter, but I believe general only joined you in the local chapter, cost $75, and had limited if any scholarship opportunities. Par excellence was only like $10 or $15, but then you had to earn 6 “stars” in order to officially join the national chapter. You earned the stars through community service and fundraising-- think little Caesars pizza kits and candy bars. My school’s chapter provided events we could go to for quarter and half stars, as well, and we could get up to one star for community service we did independently.

Note that all this requires that your CC has a PTK chapter.

I for one did not have the time or the money to get to the events for the par excellence membership. I joined just as my last semester was starting and I paid the initial $15 and managed to get three stars, but the events were all in the middle of the day when I had classes or I needed to drive to Detroit or pay admission to go to an event. I did lots of community service by myself and with rotoract but could only get one star for projects not affiliated with PTK. Fundraising would have been an option but historically I have not been good at those. It is definitely a VERY good opportunity for people who have the time to commit to it. Anyone interested should check out the website, there are all kinds of benefits to being a member.

Sounds too complicated to do Phi Theta Kappa

If I needed a CC transfer scholarship, I’d try for the other ones above.
