Here's to O-Week and hugs to Rice Moms and Dads

And so it begins, the very beginning for Class of '15. A memorable week forging ties that will stay alive for four years -- and likely beyond.

As a Rice Mom, and a very proud one, I send hugs to every new Rice Mom and Rice Dad
out there. Know that your love and nurturing guidance helped guide your Rice Owl to this marvelous community. Be assured, that O Week advisers will lend a hand in more ways than you can guess ... that Rice will be a second home in little time.

Be good to yourselves when you get home and find a quieter place. Know that there are quite a few Rice Moms and Dads who visit here. Let us know how it's going and how we can help!

As soon as we got home from move-in, my husband put our Rice decal on the car. And over the years, our home collection of owls has been growing …

Goose bumps here! Doesn’t matter what class, what college your Owl’s in – these images are so exciting to see! Hope it was extra-special for Class of '15 parents!

Thanks, BrooklyninOh – what a terrific treat!

I was hoping that some new Rice Moms and Dads would share stories about move-in or some news from O-Week. In the past, a similar thread drew in some great stories.

https://www.prioritymail.com/flatrates.asp</a> And whether you need to send your Owl’s favorite granola bars, the sandals left behind, a picture of Fido – this is an efficient way to get stuff to campus.

Whether you feel like sending personal messages with questions or joining the dialogue here, there are are several Rice Moms and Dads here who remember when our kids were freshmen!

the Rice youtube site has some great videos from o-week so far.

Thanks everyone for the links and warm wishes! We dropped our youngest D off at Martel college on Sunday. What an exciting day for everyone. My S is a junior at Lovett and my husband and I are just so happy to have two Owls-what a fabulous university! I did start crying watching the YouTube clip-how thrilling and powerful for the class of 2015!

So, does it get easier saying good bye when your Owl’s a senior and you know he won’t be home till December? Though he’s much missed at Thanksgiving, every year he stays on campus to help reduce costs, and he ends up writing papers and celebrating with friends, faculty, etc.

No question, I’ve felt a bit blue for the last few days, as he transitions from living at home working on a political internship to getting organized for his activities and classes on campus. He’s had so many opportunities at Rice to nurture his leadership skills, and this term will be a very busy one for him.

So, we’re off to the airport, tomorrow morning… And I’m going to fly back to Houston for one day at Families Weekend in late October.

Good luck to all returning Owls! And hugs to all the other Rice Moms and Dads who are also saying good bye! Yay, Class of '12!

About to board a plane to houston taking my first years masters student who missed both the Rice orientation and the shepherd school of music orientation. Going to be very hard to say goodbye on Wednesday but I think she is so ready to fly at Rice. Prayers with all the families saying goodbye this week.

Oh, ABlestMom, what a fantastic opportunity for your daughter to be a grad student at
Shepherd! May she thrive and enjoy being part of the Rice family! Hope you can make it down for one of her concerts …

Thanks  This was my first visit to Rice - what a gorgeous campus! Her grad apartment is unbelievable and I’m sure she will have a fantastic year. The students seem extremely friendly and happy and my daughter adores all her teachers and is so excited about every single course. What a privilege to attend this school! For sure I will be at every event possible, putting my frequent flyer mileage to good use.

ABlestMom, you might want to subscribe to Shepherd (see the link in #11) to get
upcoming schedule info.
