Does anyone know when the notifications for semifinalist status will be sent out? It says early February on the Hesburgh-Yusko website, but does anyone know an exact date?
I’m pretty sure they’ll be out monday. I’m going to the Reilly weekend and the HYSP emailed me with a semifinalist notification because they wanted to know if I would be available to visit again if I were to make finalist… It made more sense in context haha. But they said information about what to do next as part of the semifinalist portion will be emailed on Monday, so I’m assuming that’s when the rest of the notifications will go out as well. Good luck!
Congratulations! @bryceman alright I knew it was soon so Monday makes sense, thanks for the insight!
Has anyone heard???
I haven’t heard anything yet, but I got the invitation to apply back in December around 3 in the afternoon so maybe it’ll come around then?
@costrick I go invited to apply, too! I haven’t been able to find anyone else who had!
Notifications will be going out this afternoon. Just called.
Daughter just got email saying she is moving on to semi-finals. Wow. Best wishes to everyone.
Anyone else heard anything? I’m an international (UK) and I’ve got nothing yet
I am international too (Brazil) and I’ve got nothing yet . Will they also notify if you didn’t make it ?
I called and they said the decisions were coming out “in the next 24 hours.”
Not moving on. Kind of stinks but I was expecting it. Definitely no regrets though. The application really helped me think about my life and where God needs me. We need good, moral and transformative leaders in the world. Unfortunately not everyone can be a Hesburgh Yusko Scholar; however, everyone still has a role to play somewhere in the world. Best of luck to everyone moving on! You totally deserve it. And best of luck to everyone who wasn’t accepted. Like me, we just need to find our niche elsewhere [-O<
IM MOVING ON!! Anyone know how they’re doing the video? Like, just staring at a camera and talking for six minutes, right?
And @SoliDeoGloria1, your attitude is really awesome - I’m sure you’re an amazing applicant, and I just wanted to say I’m really impressed with what you said.
Curious as to the stats of people moving on and what they were really looking for in the finalists. Rejection here but not surprised. As a scholar athlete with great academic stats, I just didn’t have the time to get as deep into the community service/volunteerism that I think they were looking for. Congrats to those made it and I would love to hear more about you.
my son is not moving on! Congrats to all and good luck in the next round! Go Irish!!
@kittythebeagle Kitty, thank you so much for the response! It means a lot Congratulations on moving forward. You will do great with the video.
Quick overview on my application for those wondering: Nothing spectacular in my application. I am your average Midwest, Catholic teenage guy. I tried to make my application revolve around my passion for education. My two large essays focused primarily on this topic. My favorite community service/volunteer activity is helping out at a nursing home near my house. It is a nursing home for the retired clergy and religious brothers/sisters in my diocese. I help them play Bingo, and they are honestly the greatest group of people in the world. I would go so far as to say that when I help them, it feels like I am assisting saints! It is honestly an incredible experience.
I also do parish youth group and parish volunteer work. Oh, and I am an altar server! I am president of my school’s Pro-Life Club and NHS. I tutor students in mathematics. Finally, I am in Student Council and have held multiple leadership positions.
I am really hoping that I can get into Notre Dame. I applied RD and would really be disappointed if I got rejected… But hey, it is all in God’s Hands!
One last reflection: I think I should have reflected more on my feelings toward the priesthood and religious life. I am not sure if God needs me there, but I am definitely open to it. When it comes to social justice, Fr. Hesburgh is one of my role models. He has helped me think about the priesthood a little bit more. It would be incredible to have a Hesburgh-Yusko Scholar go on to become a priest and then the president of Notre Dame or a bishop. Maybe that future Church leader is in the next Hesburgh-Yusko Class!
I did not move on but I wish the best of luck to those who did! Congratulations!
Hi all! Congratulations to those of you who moved on. Sadly, my child did not but I am not surprised as it is a very competitive pool and I am just proud of them for taking a chance. Does anyone had any information on whether having taken the chance and providing more information (letters of rec etc.) helps in the ND RD admissions process? In other words, is this rejection a strike against the applicant or does the effort show demonstrated interest? Any opinion or anecdotal evidence would be welcome
was your child asked to apply by ND or did your high school nominate them? if they were nominated by their high school, I don’t think it’ll affect their application significantly: the people who read those applications are probably different than the people who read these ones. I don’t know if they’d put the extra letters of rec into the applicant’s file. I’m sure it shows interest, so that’s a point in that category. Just because they aren’t in the top 1% of Notre Dame students doesn’t mean they don’t stand a great chance in regular admissions.
Thank you, @Iliketofence. They were nominated by their HS. Your bigger picture viewpoint helps ease the sting a bit.
