I am only a freshman:o. I'll be a freshman in college when my sister is a senior, so if I end up at Smith also, we will have only one year at the same school. I was so disappointed when I realized that all of the freshman Smithies will be gone by the time that I am a freshman, but now I might be able to meet some Smithies (and Smithies' parents) over the next few years! I'm hoping that my sister will let me visit her sometimes in her house. I think that I might actually be more excited than she is!!! I'm off to look at Smith's website again!
YAY!:D!:D!:D!:D!:D!:D!:D!:D!:D!:D!:D!:D!:D!:D!

Wow, Yemaya, you started young!!!!!!!!!!

Good luck and work hard during your next three years of high school.

yemaya13- sweetie, do your sister a HUGE favor if you're a lot more excited than she is about Smith, just hold the excitement in just a bit. Give your sister a chance to get hyper about Smith otherwise it won't be fun for her to start the fall semester thinking, "oh my god, my little sister's more excited about this than I am, do I even belong here?". Same thing happened between me and my mom- totally ruined my fall semester. Just be supportive with words but don't do all the work for her in terms of finding her the perfect house.

If you need to scream with happiness, do it outside or on here :)

TheDad~ I got hooked in this autumn, and now I'm an addict. The Parents' Forum and Smith Forum are the best!!!

ticklemepink~ Don't worry. I get my Smith fix by looking at Smith's website (and quickly minimizing the window if my sister comes), reading threads from this forum, and searching the old forum for threads with Smith mentioned in them when I have nothing better to do. I admit it... I'm in love! :)

Yemaya, TMP gives good advice, I think. But we'll welcome your enthusiasm as a proto-Smithie here. :)

To yemaya13: yeah you started young!
good luck!!

Y- you're doing good. That's what I always do when I'm looking at something that I'm not supposed to be as excited about as the "victim"!

Does anyone know what's permitted in the dorms? Are small refrigerators, microwaves or toaster ovens permitted?

small fridges yes, microwaves and toasters no. each house has at least a kitchenette (some have actual student kitchens) that have microwaves in them.

If I am not planning on going home during Thanksgiving break, should I choose a house that is open during that time?

It is probably easier and more comfortable to stay in your own room but as we said to the OP you can probably get an invitation to go home with a friend or stay in a room in a house that is open. If you live too far away to go home, going home with a friend might be much more fun than staying at school. My D who is at school this week because of an orchestra concert, says it is very strange to be there after most people have gone home. I am sure over breaks there is a community of people who stay, so it is not so strange.

If I am more accustomed to Asian cuisines, which house would serve food that is more closely related to it?

Thanks for the advice, Mini.

I'm thinking about Chapin as of now. Does anyone have anything to say about that house?

Hi everyone, im also going to Smith this fall. I still haven't filled in my housing form yet. What would u recommend for sb who's quiet and not a major party person? Should I rule out the Quad since from what I've heard it's pretty noisy compared to other areas?
It would be great if the house is old and pretty ^^

hey! I am going to Smith this fall too~
as for a quite and not a major party person, I think Lawrence and Morris will be great~
nice to meet you!

Lungan456, currently the Comstock/Wilder dining room in the quad serves asian food for dinner. I assume that will probably stay the same for next year but the dining system is still evolving and going through changes. If it is really important to you I would email the 2eat folks and ask. You can get info on dining at Smith by going to www.Smith.edu/2eat/
From what I know none of the quad houses are open over break, so if you want to eat there and live in a house that is open over break you will have a small walk.

Lungan, one of my D's friends lives in Chapin. We had dinner with her last night and she's very happy there.

Hi Doris ^^ Nice to meet you too. Guess what, I'm an int'l from Asia as well. Which country are you from?

Thanks for the advice. Which house did u decide on in the end? From your recent posts it seems to be Lawrence.

I heard Lawrence and Lamont have the most international students. Is this true?

I'm an extremely shy person, and people have been telling me to live in the quad where I can "get out of my box," so to speak. I am fine with that, but I'm afraid that more quiet people like me who I associate with more won't be there. Is this true?

I was also looking at Lawrence or Morris, but are the rooms and bathrooms there older compared to Lamont, which has been recently renovated?

Wow, too many questions. I feel overwhelmed.

Lungan: According to my daughter, Lawrence does have a lot of international students, although I don't know whether they have "the most." I imagine a lot of international students are assigned to Lawrence because it does stay open during breaks (there is a full kitchen there, but no dining hall). There are a number of quiet people in Lawrence who might be described as shy, but it has also seemed a very friendly place this year. Yes, the rooms and bathrooms do have an "older" feel to them but that is also part of their charm. There is lots of old woodwork around the doors to the rooms and that sort of thing. From what I hear on CC, all the houses on Green Street are nice, although, as I believe Mini pointed out, there will be construction of the new engineering complex starting next year across the street from Lawrence and Hubbard, and that might be noisy. On the other hand, the proximity of the Green Street houses to the center of campus and athletic facilities and the performing arts center is extremely nice. And I hear there is a place called "Chocolate" on Green Street which has concoctions that would cause any self-respecting chocoholic to swoon at the first mouthful.

_pooka: I am from mainland China. YAY~ where are you from?
Yep, I hope I can live in Lawrence. cos I love the "older" feel and the kitchen!(though I don't know much abt cooking..ft..) and I love shy and friendly ppl at first. plus I desire to be close to the athletic facilities to push myself exercising more!~~haha
but definitely I wish to live in the Quad the next year!
