Hey~ about dorms

Any other questions? Ask quickly...I'm in Northampton for the next 32 hours and will be on Smith campus in the morning, tomorrow night, and again on Wednesday.

i know some schools allow them in the room, and some schools don't...some schools have cable connections and some schools don't....neword on where smith falls into the equation?

i know i know, ther'ell b tons to do in n.hampton and on campus, and i'm not looking to be a couch potato...but after future long days at classes/work...i wouldn't mind curling up to a comforting episode of gilmore girls or the west wing.

All the houses except Hubbard have TV's in their living rooms. There's no reason that Hubbard doesn't have a TV except that the residents have never voted for one...I think they take perverse pleasure in being different. However, even at Hubbard, some students have individual TV's in their rooms. I can't say that reception is good on all channels. Watching DVD's on computer is a popular leisure activity...there's a lot of DVD swapping that goes on, from what I hear...if every student had only 2-3, that would be quite a library within the house...some students have a dozen or more.

Greetings all... D and parental units are back home in california. if you want to know more about rooms in Chapin House, we are happy to answer questions. i also now have photos (in JPEG format) of the floor plans and some empty rooms that i can email to any interested parties upon request. at chapin, in addition to living room TV, there is a TV (and a pool table) in the basement.

we spent friday nite and most of saturday packing up D's belongings.
saturday packing activity coincided with pre-graduation/alumni events on the lawn outside D's room window. the evening was highlighted by the illumination celebration, when thousands of candle lanterns lit up the campus walks and a live jazz concert filled the air.

it's a major convenience to students that Chapin and other houses have basement storage rooms. D is storing 6 large cartons, plus 2 boxes of books, floor lamp, x-country skis, bicycle, bookshelf, shoerack. forewarned of possible but unlikely flooding or leaks, we plastic-bagged all winter clothing, bedding, books before boxing them.

papajaja, I would be interested in seeing the photos of Chapin inside. Could you please e-mail them to me? I'm a newbie on CC...can you do that with the pm function or do I have to give you my personal e-mail address? My D will be attending Smith this fall as a first year. I'm probably as excited as she is. We don't know which house she will be in yet, and I don't remember what she put on her housing form. The only thing I remember is that she requested not to be in the quad because she'll need to stay at Smith over Thanksgiving, and they close down, at least I think they do.

Does anyone know when they will start mailing out room assignments? Do they wait until everyone is assigned a room or do they make earlier assignments and notify those who sent in their deposit and preference early?

I specified Chapin and Tyler as my preference, but I'll probably be happy in most any house.

Middle of July. I received mine around July 22nd last year, I think, but it could be later. All the assignments are sent out at the same time.

SmartGirlsMom (& others),
i can't attach photos to pm's, so i'll need an email address destination to send the photos. first year will be quite exciting. as we were moving boxes to basement, it was touching to hear graduating seniors in the hallway saying they couldn't believe they'd not be back to participate in more Smith traditions (although for alums, there are other traditions). also while we were packing, 2 alums who had lived in Chapin dropped by to check out their old rooms; they shared a few of their fond memories.

Room assignments do go out mostly at the same time, mid to late July. You will get your room assignment and the name and address of your roommate if you have one. People who get their forms in early or at least on time seem to have a better chance of getting the area of campus they want. In late June or early July your phone number may show up on the smith website campus directory. Sometimes you can find out what house you got from that. (Each house has phone numbers in a particular range.) This is yet another exercise in waiting with bated breath.

Papajaja and any other parents or students, could you send me some pictures of Smith, please? I am having trouble hiding my enthusiasm for Smith from my sister!!! I can pm my email address to anyone who would be willing to share some pictures.

D is in Haven for a few weeks this summer. Only negative so far is that the showers are smaller than her House, Hubbard.

As for senior traditions, at least some Houses have the tradition of seniors streaking from their House to the President's house and back.

yemaya,
pm an email address to me, and i'll send pics.

I heard Cutter and Ziskind are more modern style houses. Is this true?

Yes, they are more modern. I toured them while I was on campus. On a positive note, there was much more natural light because of more and larger windows, and they have a pretty nice dining facility.

I really didn't like these two houses though. They seemed a bit sterile and lacking in charm. The common area furniture and draperies were also pretty shabby -- tattered and torn upholstery, and saggy frayed draperies.

I'm currently living in Cutter for the week. The showers are tiny, the singles are tiny. The doubles, however, one of which I'm currently in, are quite big, and this one has a nice view of Lamont across the street. The closets wooden and look pretty cool, and there are built in shelves across the wall. I stayed in a single for preorientation and much prefer the space of a double. I prefer living in my usual house (Haven-Wesley), but I love the kitchen staff (I worked lunch shifts doing dishes during the school year, and will miss it with my new, and slightly better paying, computer lab job). The dining room is also being expanded this summer.

What are the differences between each of the quad houses?
Are there storage areas for the quad houses?
If your house is not open during break, will you have to find a place to stay yourself, or will Smith relocate you?

While waiting to pick up D for lunch today, I took a bunch of photos from all around the Smith campus today. E-mail me if you're interested.

Cutter & Ziskind are more modern. Personally, I prefer the charm of the older houses. YMMV.
