Hey guys.
I was wondering what you thought my chances are of getting into Georgia Tech, and if you could tell me how to improve them.
Currently I’m a sophomore in high school. Last year I had around a 3.4 unweighted gpa, and this year, i will be ending with a 3.71 unweighted gpa. I take all honors math and science, and I’ve taken two science classes each year. This year I have an A and an A- in the sciences, and a B+ in math. Last year wasn’t as good; I had a B and B+ in sciences and a B in math.
Although thats not great, I do offer a few different things to Georgia Tech.
Firstly, I’m a nationally ranked and rated fencer (ranked and rated are different). I go to national tournaments, and will be going to international tournaments next year.
Secondly, I have been recruited by research groups to be a co-author in papers dealing with robotics, and hardware. By the time I am a senior, there should be six scientific papers published in journals with my name listed as a co-author. These are at somewhat well known colleges.
Finally, I started my own club in my school [The Sci-Fi fantasy club (you can probably its a really cool club )], and I play cello in the honors orchestra.
By the time I graduate, I will have taken 5 APs.
If anyone can tell me if I should reach for a more realistic goal or not, that would be extremely helpful. Thank you so much for reading this. Also, if you have any advice for how I can improve my chances, I would appreciate it a lot.
If you are a GA resident, try to raise your overall GPA to 3.7 , and get a 26+ on ACT to get a full tuition paid Zell Miller grant at GT. With a 3.0 GPA you quality for a HOPE grant of about $6700. Tuition at GT is around 10K in state. Together the grants will pay 100% of your GT tuition - you’ll just need money for living expenses. Off Campus housing can be expensive in downtown Atlanta, but not like the west and northeast.
As far as getting in to GT, GPA is 3.8 average and ACT is 30-33. Shoot for a 33 or greater given your current GPA. Your AP class load is a little less than average - take more if you can too. Try to finish the Calc AB/BC sequence as it is essential for engineering and many sciences. Your GPA is rising and should be fine (if it continues to do so) and your publications are unusual for a high school student. GT loves nerds. Make sure to apply for Early Action for scholarships- deadline is usually Oct 15 - and admission chances are higher. GT is substantially harder to get in then in previous years - admission rates are down to 33% and dropping. The College of Computing is overloaded and rapidly expanding - classes may be a little difficult to get into for non-majors.
So overall you are doing very well, just work on your standardized tests. GT does not require SAT subject tests but they are another data point if you do well.
GT is a really great school especially if want an urban setting. The athletic facilities are excellent too. Its reputation is so great that many southern employers put GT grads directly into the interview process. Recruitment is very heavy and Atlanta is a wonderful city. And it has the second best fight song (after Michigan!).
The only downside of GT is the male/female imbalance still about 1/3 female, 2/3 male
Thanks so much TooOld4School
