Hey, I just met you! And this is crazy! But here are my stats, so chance me maybe?

Off the bat, let me totally own the cheesy Call Me Maybe lyrics that (hopefully!) convinced you to click on this link and take a look at my chances thread! I would really appreciate feedback on what you think of my college list and my chances at each school. Also, I would love to hear any school suggestions. I will chance back!

Grade: Rising Senior
GPA: 3.75 (Upward trend)
SAT: 2260 (CR: 800; W: 780; M: 680)
Hook/URM: African-American. (My parents are East African immigrants.)
School: An elite progressive private school, where there is no weighting and no AP classes are offered. Instead, challenging classes are given an 'Accelerated' designation, but even that is limited to language and science classes. Literally, stamped all over our college material is that WE DO NOT DO AP'S and we are NOT A TEST-HEAVY SCHOOL.

Classes:

9th:[ul]
[]English: A-
[]US History: B+
[]Physics: A-
[]Math: B+
[]French: B-
[]Design (art): B+
[li]Characterization (art) : A-[/li][/ul]

10th:[ul]
[]English electives: A/A/A
[]World History: A
[]Chemistry: B+
[]Math: B
[]Shakespeare (art - play): A
[/ul]
Instead of year-long English classes, after 9th grade my school offers only semester-long electives. I have been doubling in English classes (and dropping my Arts class) since freshman year, which means I take 6 academic classes a semester instead of 5.

11th:[ul]
[]English electives: A+/A/A/A
[]20th Century History (Acc.): A
[]Biology w. Chemistry: A-
[]Math: A-
[li]French: B/B+[/li][/ul]

12th:/u[ul]
[]English electives: A
[]Islamic Civilization: A
[]French: A-
[]Anatomy: A
[]Calculus: A-
[]Directing: A
[/ul]

AP/SAT II:

AP's:

English Lit - 5
English Lang - 5

Anticipating 5's on both; self-studied, since school offers no APs and our Acc. classes are not designed to prepare us for the AP tests.

SAT II's:

English - 780
US History - 750

Extracurricular's:[ul]

[]4-year Varsity Crosscountry athlete, will letter.
[]BtC - 4 year commitment; club that meets to discuss the racial/ideological gaps and issues within my school's community and the wider world. I am also involved in hosting a series of days in the upcoming year which will introduce the wider school community to the issues we discuss every week.
[]Leader of Debate Club - 4 year commitment; Big deal at my school, will co-lead.
[]Arts Editor of school newspaper - 3 year commitment; 2 years Arts Editor.
[]Writing Tutor - 2 year commitment
[]MAJOR Theater commitment over the years -- participation in 4 plays throughout high school, with lead roles in 2 of those, including a major lead role in our Shakespeare production during my sophomore year.
[]Bard Writing Workshop and UVA Writing Workshop participant
[]CIT at a summer camp for my sophomore year summer
[li]3 weeks teaching English in the country my parents came from (will feature in my essay, which is explained in more depth later.)[/li][/ul]

Awards: School does not do awards along with having any AP's, so this section is n/a. Just to reiterate, we have a long tradition of sending a large portion of our graduating class to highly selective universities, and the middle fifty percent to challenging, well-regarded schools. This aspect of my application will likely not pose a problem.

Essays: Will be stellar. English is my standout subject, and I've applied to things in the past and regularly been accepted. I know this sounds super arrogant and preachy, but I'm very, very confident in this part of the process.

Recommendations: From my English teacher and History teacher. My English teacher is going to have PHENOMENAL things to say about me as we are very close. Likewise, my History teacher is also the advisor for a club I'm a leader in, so also very positive things to say.

School List:
Would really appreciate feedback on whether my initial assessment of each school (safety/target/reach) was on point AND chances the reach/target schools. (Also, suggestions for other targets! As you can see, I only have one!)

St. Mary's College of Maryland - safety
Grinnell College - safety
Colby College - safety
Wellesley College - safety

Oberlin College - target

Vassar College - reach
Amherst College - reach
Brown University - reach

Wellesley is not a safety. It is a high match or reach (statistically). Also vasar is more of a target. All schools are great changes especially with the URM status. I’d be shocked if you didn’t get into almost all, if not all, your reaches though. Good luck!

I’m very impressed with your SAT score but your gpa could use a little work. Overall your schools are great matches. Good luck!!
Chance me back!

I’m a parent so you don’t have to chance me. You had me at the clever (and yes, cheesy) post title. I think your stats and EC’s are great, and while the GPA is not perfect, I don’t think it will hold you back. The schools get a lot of “perfect” applicants but yours is very interesting. I don’t know what kind of school/region you are looking for, but you can shoot for the moon, as long as you have safe places to land, schools that you are very likely to be admitted to, can afford, and will be happy there. If you have your eyes on any Ivy’s I think you have a shot (IMHO) However, admissions are so unpredictable one also has to have other schools- and you have some good ones. If you are interested in the Southeast- Davidson is great for humanities, Emory, Vanderbilt, Duke are worth a look. I am sure your essay will be interesting to read as well.

Grinnell and Wellesley are not safeties, and Vassar’s more of a target than a reach… With that being said, you have pretty good chances anywhere you apply, so I’d apply to more reach schools(:

You might want to look at Rhodes College and Trinity College for matches, as well as Reed College for a low reach. Also, have you considered Yale as a reach?

i think oberlin is a safety with your awesome stats. not sure what region you’re looking at or what major, but i think you should look into tufts, u of richmond, george washington. just offering some suggestions :)

heh catchy title indeed. Anyway, the lack of AP thing won’t hurt you. In fact, self-studying for them (even if its only 2) will definitely help. Grades are fine, and the recs/essays (as you say) are very much in your favor. Very good ECs, and make sure you play up the ones you have major commitment in. Good luck!

I think you could definitely get in at Oberlin, Vassar, and Amherst. Brown is an iffy for everyone.

@Divy1234, @tjmacdonald - Thanks for the feedback! The only reason Wellesley is there as a safety is because our school’s college counselor put that down on my list. I completely agree that it’s a high-profile, competitive school however.

@Pennylane2011 - Haha, I’m glad you liked the title! I hoped it would stand out. I’ve looked at Emory, Vandy, and Duke. They’re all interesting, compelling schools, and Vandy and Emory, I think, would be matches or low reaches, with Duke as a reach.

@EliKresses - I agree, both Grinnell and Wellesley are competitive schools! Again, my school’s college counselor put these down as safeties for me and I defer to her years of wisdom, haha. That being said, I plan to apply to 3/4 safeties, so hopefully if one doesn’t take me, the other will!

@termah420 - Thank you for the suggestions! Would Tufts/George Washington be a reach?

@missjulia423 - Thanks for the feedback!

Tufts might be a reach but I think you could definitely get into GWU.

What state are you from? You have a really awesome resume, but I think it’s more like this.

St. Mary’s College of Maryland - safety
Grinnell College - high match
Colby College - high match
Wellesley College - match
Oberlin College - match
Vassar College - low match
Amherst College - reach
Brown University - reach

I agree with SgtDonut.

You’re definitely in at SMCM.

I believe you have a prettygood chane getting on Brown. Your GPA may be a little low, but you are going in an upward trend, which is good!
Your stats are really good, actually. Your GPA seems to be the only thing that may pull you back on your reach schools.

DO WELL ON YOUR ESSAYS. The essays can either make or break you! Colleges are holistic, they look at you as a whole. They’ve seen your grades, ECs, etc… Now, they want to get to know you from the essays.

Best of luck!

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1356903-chance-me-lacs-few-universities-will-chance-back.html</a></p>

no problem! also, chance back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1303604-early-decision-chances.html</a></p>

I think your SAT/ECs are pretty great. Your GPA is a little low, but from your description of your school, I’m sure admissions officers give your GPA a little more weight than they might if it was from a less rigorous school. I’d advise you to apply to a few more reaches too, I’m sure you’re going to be very successful in the admissions process.

Chance back please! http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1360777-chances-hyps-urm.html</a></p>

BUMP. Can anyone give me some help finding schools similar to Oberlin?

Bard College.

Let me clarify – similar to Oberlin in the sense that I need more ‘target’ schools.
