Hey, Parents, Help a Kid Out!

I'm just starting to get interested in colleges and universities now, so my first two years of high school dropped by the wayside.

I was a B+ (3.9 out of 4.5, weighted) student in freshman year and a 3.3 (out of 4.5) unweighted student as a sophomore - with two honors classes.

Currently in junior year, I've gotten off to a great start. I'm taking AP US History plus two honors classes (English and College Accounting) and so far keeping up well.

The last practice PSAT I took I got 184. Will be taking it in the fall, with the goal of 200.

My ECs include the following:
-Sports Editor, nationally recognized newspaper
-Paid gig as a journalist (Aug.-Oct. 2010)
-Business club, officer
-Phillips Academy Summer Program 2010
-Helped organize run for autism for since 2009
-Tennis team, JV captain spring 2011

So I reach out to ask, where should I be looking and where have your kids who have had (somewhat) similar resumes looked in the past few years?

What do you want to study? What part of the country? What size school? Are finances a limitation?

Want to study either journalism or business… I live in a highly competitive NY area… Open to size and not restricted by finances… Mom and dad are alumnus from Colgate and Michigan, both reaches at this point, I would assume.

For journalism, start learning what you can about the Newhouse School of Communications at Syracuse. Best program on that side of the country. While direct entrance to Newhouse is very competitive, once you’re in the school and have maintained a certain GPA (I want to say a 3.25), you can transfer in during your sophomore year. If you major in journalism at Syracuse, you’re required to have a minor. But many people double major and one of the most popular ones is public policy.

Do you want a sports scene? Syracuse’s is about to get more exciting with the transfer to the ACC.

Ha, great advice! Visited 'Cuse this summer and apparently it was extremely competitive to get into Newhouse this year from the regular university. I don’t want to simply bank on making the grade because otherwise I’m stuck with Syracuse when I feel I can do better.

bump it up?

Check out University of Missouri for journalism. It is a very well-respected program, among the top in the country.
