hey sexy, press this button and help a gal out

hey guys im currently a junior ill be moving this summer to europe and probably going to a boarding school in austria. as you're about to see, my GPA is not so hot. currently, i'm looking to finish taking AP classes (a bunch) but i've been thinking that to increase my grade point, extracurriculars, and my chances whether i should do the IB program and graduate in two years instead of one. however, i really don't want to do an extra year of high school. but if it helps a lot i'm willing to go for it. is this a smart option?

well, for the mean time here are my stats if i were to apply next fall: (this is the main stuff cuz i want to keep it short and simple for you guys)

GPA: 3.5/4.5 (baaaaad sophomore year)

Very good recs

here are the schools: (there's a lot but im willing to do the work to keep my options open)

tufts
american
george washington
emory
boston college
seton hall
u pittsburgh
boston u
james madison
rice
stanford (hey why not)
william & mary (one of my favs)
middlebury
lehigh
carnegie mellon

ill narrow it down a bit by the time i apply

thanks a lot! ill return the favor!!!!!

The fact that you're hispanic and have an outstanding extracurricular resume suggests to me that the only school on that list that is likely to reject you is stanford. 3.5 is low, but you're so solid otherwise I think you'll be looking at a lot of acceptances.

Stanford would be possible if you showed a passion and wrote excellent essays.

thanks guys. oh just thought i would correct this- i'm HALF hispanic but my counselor said i'm hispanic nonetheless. however, i do have a very weird ethnic mix

how do i show passion to a school like stanford?

I would do the IB program for a better shot at Stanford.

is james mad a safety?

I'm sorry but someone needs to say it: your GPA is not going to help you.

tufts - reach
emory - low reach
rice - reach
stanford (hey why not) - impossible
william & mary (one of my favs) - low reach
middlebury - reach
carnegie mellon - low reach

The others you have a good chance. The ones above, honestly, there are kids applying with better grades than you and all the same or better extracurriculars.

tufts - Slight Reach
american - Safe Match
george washington - Safe Match
emory - Slight Reach
boston college - Match
u pittsburgh - Safe Match
boston u - Safe Match / Safety
rice - Slight Reach / Reach
stanford (hey why not) - Reach
william & mary (one of my favs) - Slight Reach
middlebury - Reach
lehigh - Match
carnegie mellon - Match

Your borderline between match/slight reach for alot of schools in my opinion, so it'll probably come down to how you present yourself in your application.

Also, you might want to consider taking out some safe matches / safeties...

I'm not so sure the GPA will be the RUIN of your application. The SAT is amazing.

How's your class rank? If it's below top 25%, then yes, the above poster is probably correct.

A higher class rank could make up for your lacking GPA. If that is the case, I'd actually say your chances are quite good at Tufts, Middlebury and Rice.

But otherwise, they're probably slight reaches.... Your SAT is high for these schools and the URM status can also help out there. I don't think they're that much of a reach for you.

Your rank has to be AT LEAST top 10% for a decent chance at Middlebury, Tufts, Rice.

Getting a high SAT score on one Saturday morning does not make up for 4 years of 3.5.

wow... a 3.5 UNweighted is NOT that bad..... you're hispanic and have a 2310 on the sat's. i think there was a hispanic guy on this thread who got a 2000 and he got into harvard, princeton, yale, and a whole lot of other good schools. that being said, i'd say the people here are just jealous. go apply to other good schools as well. oh yeah, didn't see that you spoke 4 languages fluently either, that should help as well.

my cousins friend who was a hispanic female got in to columbia, upenn and UVA with a 3.5 GPA but lower sat scores and less activities then u...so i think u have a decent shot

It doesn't matter how many you speak fluently UNLESS you are able to show it to colleges, you have to do the Subject Tests for that language to show them, if it's not offered then you're out of luck, you have to SHOW them, not say you know 4 languages.

well...here are some clarifications:

1) at my current high school (a very well known and super competitive public) i'm in the top 10% in a class of 900 because of my high weighted GPA. my new schools do not do the class rank system however.

2) well...i am planning to take the spanish subject test if it is offered. however, there's no french one...

lol, I had to click cause of your subject title.

The fact that you're "half" hispanic (oh just mark it as your first ethnic background and you win) and you have a cushy SAT score with nice XC's probably pushes you into the door for all of the colleges... just write some amazing essays! Good luck girl!

P.S. Rotary Interact, YEAHHHH

"2) well...i am planning to take the spanish subject test if it is offered. however, there's no french one..."

erm.. <a href="http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/sat/lc_two/french/french.html?french%5B/url%5D">http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/sat/lc_two/french/french.html?french</a> cough
<a href="http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/sat/lc_two/frenchlist/frenchlist.html?frenchlist%5B/url%5D">http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/sat/lc_two/frenchlist/frenchlist.html?frenchlist</a>
cough

well i guess that solves my problem chutops

and katarina...;) i love interact

Still, Subject Tests aren't as rewarded as much as AP exams, if you were truly fluent, you'd do all the AP Spanish/French Exams.

i'm planning on doing that. and btw, im not fluent in french but portuguese. however, i will take the german and spanish AP test this may
