Hi and Intro--any other parents out there?

Hi everyone. This forum was recommended to me when I posted in the parents’ forum, since I’m a parent… a parent of two little kids who wants her master’s. I just wanted to introduce myself.

Any other moms or dads out there going to school? Are you working, too? Is this mid-career or changing career or starting out after staying at home with little ones?

I’d love to hear what you’re doing and how you did it. Especially the FAFSA–do I put my kids’ Coverdells on the FAFSA? It’s not like I can use that money! (It was their birthday money and such!)

I spent my lunch hour today convincing my husband that I need to go back to school…he bought it :o)

I have a BS degree, and am a financial analyst for a Fortune 100 company. I’ve been here for 18 years and hate every minute of it.

I’m looking into an accelerated BSN program, then an MSN/Nurse Practitioner program. Start-to-finish is about 4 years.

My situation is complicated by the fact that my husband, who is quite a bit older than I, is retired. I am the primary breadwinner/insurance carrier. I am looking into jobs that are part-time w/benefits so I can continue to bring in some money and keep health insurance while going back to school.

And, S is a senior in high school and D is in the 5th grade…lots on my plate! But, if I have to stare down this job for 27 more years (until I’m eligible for SS) I will likely be homicidal.

I may take one pre-req class this spring, so I’m at least doing something while getting my ducks in a row. I’m looking forward to it…it’s like someone shined a flashlight into hell.

Hi! Nice to meet you and congratulations on your decision. I need to bring in more money but every job requires a master’s. I love my job but I want to be upper management. I’m glad I’m not the only one here.

Word of warning: RN demand is going down. There are two nurses in my immediate family, and five in my extended family, and they are all glad they made recent career moves a couple years ago, because apparently it’s getting tough. I don’t think this will apply to NPs as they fill a different demand entirely but in case you were thinking of nursing part-time while finishing your degree… I don’t know how easy that will be.

Glad you have seen the light at the end of the tunnel. There’s no turning back…

I am in a slightly different situation, started college at the traditional age (sometime in the latter part of the previous century). Went to college 2 years, dropped out, worked went back part time, switched majors/schools several times, got married, career, kids etc….

Anyway I eventually started working at a large state university in 2003 and decided it would be a good time to go back (I am here all day anyway, no additional commute time) – a few additional things in real life came up, and took a summer session course and actually got around to filling out an application in 2007.

I think it was the best & worst decision I ever made at the same time. Some things are actually easier for me now than they were 30 years ago, other things are way more difficult. The distractions are different now than they were back then.

One thing I am looking forward to is finally finishing a degree, the way it is going now, I will probably finish at the same time as my daughter (she is in her second semester at a different school in the same university).

The big thing to remember is – don’t sweat the small stuff, and let the big things fall into place.

Yes, we’re out here. I have two children in college, and I’m about to finish the BA degree I started 26 years ago. I am hoping to attend a divinity school for a masters before getting a PhD at another grad school. If all goes well, I’ll have a doctorate in 6 years or so.

Hi, I have been lurking here for over a year and don’t post too often. I returned to school this month as a part time student at Stony Brook University. My son attends SB as well. I don’t know if I will attempt an advanced degree yet. It will probably take me 3-4 years part time to get my BS.
