Hi and Thanks

Hi everyone

I am new to posting on this board. I just want you all to know that I learned alot from all your posts, and to thank you for easing my nerves about sending my daughter to boarding school.

She will be applying to Philipps Exeter, Hotchkiss and Milton as a boarder. Her first choice is Exeter...mine too. We had our interviews at Exeter and Hotchkiss, but not Milton yet. So, thanks again.

i'll probably be accused of trolling or whatever, but i've heard exeter has a huge hazing problem. there was a girl at the school i went to who switched in from exeter and said everybody gets hazed and that its really gross and degrading stuff. for what its worth.

i'm applying to exeter nad am really excited! it's definitely one of my top choices! what grade is your daughter in? i'm glad you feel better about sending your daughter! i know it took my parents a while!

Don't mind lbftw. He's bitter but not a troll.
Your daughter wont be accused of trolling, if she is, then she wont hang out with those girls and boys. Exeter's a big school. She'll make tons of friends.
Hazing is a problem everywhere but it's not as big now as is was in the 90's and early 2000's. I got hazed on the swim team at my highschool and it was far from dangerous. Your daughter might be asked to sing a funny song and be sprayed with silly string.

Good luck with your applications. The three schools are all highly competitive. Have you considered a safety school?

I will second what shelley14 said. These schools have more qualified applicants than they have places for them. As a result, it is possible to have disappointments in March even if she is very qualified. If you all love the idea of boarding school and the boarding life, you might consider other options that are not as competitive, but still an improvement over her local options. There are many others that can offer a great boarding life and challenging academics. Good luck!

My daughter will be going into the 9th grade. I was considering Milton as her safe school. I guess I should reconsider. Do you all have any recommendations about one? She is into History, English and Music. Not really sports oriented.

Check your private messages. I just PMed you.

i love how you people get to write off everything i say as a troll. this hazing would've been happening in the late 90s/early 2000s. i believe one of the specific things they were forced to do was bob for apples out of a toilet. sounds lovely.

i wasn't hazed at all in boarding school, nor was just about anybody i knew. but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

You might want to read the posts of "waitlistman" and others from the last admissions cycle. Milton should be considered a reach and not a safety. The girls only schools like Emma Willard and Miss Porters are worth a look. I don't know about your location, but you might want to look at the MAPL schools in the mid-Atlantic. These schools include Blair, Mercersburg, Hill, Peddie and Lawrenceville (this school is also a reach). They are great schools, but just not as competitive (exception Lawrenceville and to a lesser extent Peddie) because they are not in New England. I have a child at Blair witch is a great school. Feel free to ask me questions about it. Good luck!

I agree Burb Parent - last years March 10+ postings had a lot of joys and a lot of sorrows. Applicants like Chaos, Olivia and others. Thank heavens Olivia moved off of the wait list and Chaos was accepted to a magnet school.
I do think the MAPL schools are worth looking at. And, of course, I really like Miss Porters, Westover, and Emma Willard.

wow, this making me really nervous. I'm not applying to safety schools because the only schools i could go to are the big-endowment schools who give out huge scholarships. All those schools happen to have really low acceptance rates. hip hip horray.

Nellyrae -- There are other schools with large endowments. Also, keep in mind that you should think of endowment more as endowment per student. Take a look at Mercersburg & St. Andrew (Del). Some of the girls only schools have large endowments. I think the George School just got a huge endowment boost, but I don't know if the money has transferred over. There are schools like Culver and Cranbrook outside the northeast. Open yourself up. It's best to consider options now than have misgivings later. Of course, you have chances at your selected schools. However, a well-considered approach should give you options in March.

Nelly - you are mistaken about the only schools who give out huge scholarships being the big-endowment schools. Many smaller schools give us large average awards too. And, in fact, I know that you can also still be accepted at one of the "elites" and not be offered any financial aid - yet get lots at one of the "second tier" schools as that happened to a girl in our town.

A few years ago Milton was aggressively and generously seeking boarding students to achieve a fifty/fifty percent balance between day and boarding high school students. Students admitted then, often with very generous financial aid packages, as boarding students, may not be accepted this year as the fifty/fifty goal has almost been achieved.

Nellyrae
NMH is not on the "top tier" list (although I truly believe the rigor is comparable to the top schools) and they are quite generous with fa.

...thinking back, my older son was fa waitlisted (admitted without fa) at Exeter and given a large grant at NMH. NMH has even more money now that they've consolidated to one campus and they have received some large gifts over the past few years as well, one of which was specifically for scholarships.

We live on Long Island in New York. When we looked at Peddie online, it was great, also on paper it was great, but when we did a visit, something about it just didn't click with her or me. I will look into Blair and Lawrenceville.

Actually, we had the same reaction to Peddie! Those school visits are so important. Lawrenceville is another reach school that is certainly worth consideration, but not to balance your school list. Blair is a great school for my son, and it might click with your daughter. They have a strong History department, and you will find many faculty leaders in that department. When you go online, take a look a the weekly skeptics series. They have been building their arts programs to give the arts equal importance to sports. Good luck!

thanks for the tops guys! i requested information for a few more higher acceptance rate schools. but my mom said that i should just stick to the schools i have now and my dad is only going to let me go to a boarding school if i get into the very best ones, so i think its kinda hopeless.
