Hi I'm considering this college and I have a question or two..

I'm looking to major in the engineering department, like possibly in physics or in computer programming since i happen to love those studies.

Anyways is U of Chicago good for that? Also, I'm concerned about the environment. I hate the beach and all that, what I like is plain city.. City city city. If it's in the middle of all the big buildings and all that and the stretch goes on for miles then PLEASe let me know.

UChicago's campus is in a pretty residential neighborhood, not in the middle of big buildings. (I personally hate the city, so this is fine with me.) As far as physics is concerned, physics at UChicago is VERY strong -one of the top in the country. I believe their CompSci is good too.

cool..

i'm glad.. but how far a drive is central chicago from the college?

Chicago has no engineering school. It is about 7 miles to the Loop.

Chicago is in a pretty rough part of town--once you walk about 3 blocks from the campus, you should be a little wary.

So, is it unsafe to walk from Shoreland to campus?

im not sure...just telling you what ive heard. i know that it's a schlep from shoreland to the campus

I have visited Chicago, and I felt safe. I even rode public transportation from Michigan avenue to Hyde Park, and talked to a total stranger for the whole time. I felt that the city as a whole was very nice; when I asked for directions multiple people ended up helping me out. As for the neighborhood, it's not in the best area, but Hyde Park is just different. I don't think it would be unsafe to walk to the beach.

As for Physics, Enrico Fermi achieved the first sustained nuclear chain reaction at UChicago back in the 40s. They also said that in their physics department, there were 60 faculty and 100 students. That's insane.

Shoreland, where my S will be living, to campus is quite safe, ...can be very cold, but safe. Now, if one is talking about 2 AM, then I would walk with someone else (recommended for any city the size of Chicago). The campus police will provide an escort. I walked close to that route for years, never had a problem. I was in and around Hyde Park for 10 years or more, never had a problem. I was mugged, however, on the well-to-do near north side of Chicago. Did talk my way out of it, though.

So, is he bringing a bicycle idad, and what distance will be you be hauling that bike?

He is bringing his bike. Mailing it about 2000 miles. Only about $20 to send it in a bike box.

Really? $20.00 is a bargain. We are driving 800 miles, and I am quite unhappy at the thought of having a bike hanging over the rear of the vehicle on such a long drive.
OTOH, we were told that in early Nov., there is a huge bike sale by the campus police, so...........

Yep, about $20 (it is done by weight) via FedEx ground.

Good idea about shipping the bike - don't think it will fit in the buick!

It's not like NYU, BU, or GWU where your leave your dorm and know you're in a city.
