Hi! I'm wondering what my chances are at getting accepted into Washington University in St. Louis

Ok I'm a senior guy in high school and I'm looking at Washington University in St. Louis (Currently my #1 pick), Northwestern, Johns Hopkins, University of Chicago, and on a long shot here Princeton or Stanford. I visited WUSTL and fell in love. I'm going to visit the other schools I mentioned above as well but for now I'm trying to decide which school to apply early decision too (If I've got a good shot at WUSTL and you think my early decision app would be better tried at Princeton or Stanford please don't hesitate to tell me). Also I recently discovered that my spanish teacher (who loves me) had a son who is Princeton alumni (3-4 years out) and would happily write me a recommendation.

Academics:

4.0 unweighted GPA

1/101 Class rank however our school did away with valedictorian and class rank so I don't know the validity of this.

32 composite on the ACT (31 in reading, 30 in english, 35 in science, and 32 in math) I'm retaking it next month because WUSTL super scores.

Basic Transcript (All A's): AP Chem, AP Bio, AP Calc, AP Psych, AP Lit, dual enrollment Spanish IV, dual enrollment Composition 110/111, Physics, Bio I & II, Chemistry, Geometry, Honors Algebra I & II, Pre-Calc (Like trig), Honors English I & II, Journalism, Concert Choir, and the mandatory strength training/P.E.

AP Scores, I'm not too proud of these but prom was the weekend before the tests... AP Chem 3 & AP Lit 4

Extracurriculars:

7 years of student council, I'm currently on executive board

2014/2015 Hopewell District Convention Secretary (Associated with student council, oversees councils in an area the size of about 5 counties in central Illinois)

13 years of club ice hockey with multiple trips to playoffs

Volunteer experience throughout my town, I live in a town of about 2,400. Last fall I took a large part in the re-roofing and basement remodeling of a community member who could not afford the repairs themselves.

I also help elderly people with computers and tablets in my free time and repair electronics.

I don't know if this shows dedication to colleges or is just useless info but I also workout 5 days/week for a minimum of 1.5 hours and lost 25lbs and put it back on as muscle over the course of the past two years.

I also have accumulated a fair amount of community service over the past 6 years.

Work:

I currently work at my local library as a librarian 3 days a week for 5 hour shifts.

Last fall I took a C# programming job but that only took my friend and I about 6-7 weeks before we finished the project, got paid, and moved on.

I also have operated a lawn mowing business in my neighborhood for the past 6 years.

On weekends I work construction for my neighbor or depending on the season I work at the nearby skeet-shooting range

My personal statement pretty much highlights the fact that I had a stressful childhood with alcoholics for parents who finally divorced in spring of 2013 after 2-3 years of fighting and my brother who fell into drugs/alcohol and how these events changed my view on the world.

Do you have a good chance? Sure. But I would not view this as an easy acceptance even with ED. WUSTL is just too selective.

Just wonderig why you have less AP scores than AP classes?

I am also applying To wustl ED!

Sallymeno11, by basic transcript I meant for all of high school, including this year, I’m currently in AP Calc, AP Bio, and AP Psych as they’re unavailable until senior year at my high school (not too fond of that either). I also forgot to mention history courses in the original post but those are just state requirements and the such so nothing fabulous unfortunately. Also good luck to you on your app! Who knows maybe we’ll see each other on the quad next year if I’m fortunate enough, I fell in love with the campus on my visit!

And to AnnieBeats… I’m aware of how selective WUSTL is and I know it won’t be easy. I’m more looking for advice on how to strengthen my app in order to be admitted, not just having someone tell me “yes you’re in” or “not a chance”. Thank you for boosting my hopes and if you have any advice it’d be greatly appreciated, I’m the first person in my family to even think of prestigious schools (my dad went to a local CC and got an assoc. at a state school) so I’m headed into unfamiliar territory.

You have as good a chance as any other qualified applicant. WashU has been known to really like high test scorers however. Your GPA, rigor is fine. I would aim to get a high score on ACT or try the SAT.

Cteisphon: How high are you thinking for the ACT? I’m retesting in September with the hopes of improving my english and reading to 32-33’s. I’d be content with a 33 but a 34 can’t hurt right? I’m also pretty happy now with my 32 now (2nd attempt) as the first time I took the ACT I got a 29… (I literally woke up and took it knowing nothing of how the test works for a baseline feel).

I think you have a great chance of getting into WashU but you should definitely apply early! I am also a WashU hopeful and I have a very similar GPA/standardized test score setup. Your extracurriculars are great and I’m sure that your essays will be great too, especially since you’re discussing a very moving topic.

Applying ED to any of those schools will increase your chances but theyre still all reaches! That doesnt mean you dont have a shot though! Chance back please?

Thanks for the advice guys but I think I’m starting to shy away from top tier schools as I’m planning to go to medical school after undergrad. Med schools don’t seem to care where you attended undergrad so long as you’ve got good ECs, research, MCAT, GPA, and class rank. Top schools could get me good pre-med foundation but so can many other schools. The only thing that is really lost is maybe some med school connections (unlikely) and the prestige factor (which med school adcoms also seem to disregard.) Also I’ve discovered that there are some OOS public universities that I could attend for pretty cheap and be less stressed academically speaking.
