Hi Parents, great help with my Gonzaga thread, need more help with these schools..

....in terms of admission rates for out of state transfer students. My top 3 choices are all pretty selective: Wisconsin, UNC-CH, and William & Mary. With competitive stats and transferring with a junior standing, what are the chances of getting admitted into these schools? Also, how heavily are HS record weighed at this point, since my high school grades were abhorrent. If there are any tales about transferring to these schools and/or pros/cons I'd love to hear them also...

p.s. is it worth it to apply to schools with really small acceptance rate (I was thinking of applying to Villanova but it's currently on the "off" list due to the fact that they accept so little applicants, but it's one of my "dream" schools to go to)

^^^

Have you checked to see if these schools will look at HS record since you are a CC transfer student?

Often, universities don’t look at HS record if you’re coming in the required 60 + or - credits.

Meatballs…I think you’re the one with $50 to spend towards college (or about that much). If so, how would you fund the balance of the costs of your education at one of these more expensive schools?

^^

Thanks mom2collegekids, I looked on their websites and most said that HS transcript is required but not sure if they will be weighed more or less…

on the $50, not sure if you are confusing me with someone else, but I definitely have more than that to spend…both my parents and I will be funding that last 2 years or so of my college years…

oops…I meant to write $50,000 to spend on college. LOL I meant to put a K after that 50 :)

But, I may have you confused with someone else. Are you from Southern Cal?

If so, why aren’t you applying to any UC schools?

Post your CC stats and major again, so we’ll all be on the same page in regards to figuring out your chances.

Meatballs…did you see this info that was posted yesterday on CC…

Are those prices just tuition, or do they include room and board?

Looking at the highest, I suspect they include r&b.

^^^
Fauve: Those are supposed to include tuition & fees, plus…basic room, board and (maybe) books for one year.

UMich - tuition alone for an OOS would be $34,230, but its COA is $47,188.

Meatballs, I see from your other thread…

"my GPA is 3.82 if that helps…I’ll be applying in and then applying again for the Business School… "

so, your GPA is strong. very good. Do you know if any of the business programs require a sequential track of classes that would make it difficult for a transfer? If not, I’d say you have a good chance at any of those schools as long as being OOS is not a negative.

^^^^

mom2collegekids,
Yes I am the one with the parents who has the 50k in savings. I should also note that I also have enough saved up (25k) that I can also contribute greatly. The schools I mentioned all have separate applications to gain admission to their business school, except for William & Mary I believe. I believe all these schools do not take residency into consideration or are rather lenient, except for North Carolina which I am unsure of.

Shameless BUMP!!

Well, it looks like you’ve got some good reaches/matches… :)

Did you consider UTexas? or Texas A&M? Both have good business schools.

What are your safeties?

I have, but Texas is basically impossible to get into from out-of-state, so it was never a seriously consideration. I don’t really like A&M so also never considered it.

My safeties…right now I’m looking at my UCs (SD and SB), USD, and along with possibly SLO. Out of state ones are Iowa, Colorado, Alabama, and Syracuse (this is more of a match), oh yes, and Gonzaga :)

Of course I’ll probably narrow it down to just 2-3 safeties max, but this is what I am working on right now…

You’ve got a great list. :)

Is weather a factor for you? You’re a southern cal kid, have you ever lived where it’s been very cold?

Very cold weather wouldn’t have worked for DS1; he’s not the “hat, gloves, scarf, heavy coat” kind of kid. He’s a plaid shorts, polo, and rainbows kind of kid. His idea of “winter wear” is a hoodie…and he’d lose his gloves the first week of cold weather. LOL

^^^

LOL…no, winter weather is no factor for me at all…I actually lived in Fairbanks with my older sister for almost a year, so I’ve experienced the really cold/freezing weather…I’m definitely the kind to wear winter coat, gloves, scarfs, boots even :)

BUMP to see if anyone else can give some insight!
