I know I'm not going to be able to afford a private university since my parents are tight on cash ( we recently lost our 2 other houses to foreclosure). So I'm limited to SUNY schools..

I'm just wondering what would be the best suny school that meets my criteria.

1) Good Comp Sci Program
2) Things to do on/off campus ( Even parties count, even though I'm in no way a party-goer, people who have fun on campus regardless if they are trashing their grades) make a happier atmosphere...most of the time.
3) Isn't too small. Would asking for over 9k undergrads be too picky?

I’m pretty sure that Stony Brook, Binghamton, and Buffalo all offer computer science and are the three larger SUNY’s. Binghamton is the most selective of the three.

UB offers two undergrad computer science degrees - a BS and a BA. Buffalo, as a city, seems to offer alot (unlike Binghamton) - from interesting neighborhoods, downtown, pro (and D1) sports, tourist attractions, etc. which are all fairly easy to access from UB. There are four or five other colleges in Buffalo, so it’s definitely a student friendly town. UB is a very large school, which can be intimidating at first, but the kids seem to learn their way around very quickly and the school does a good job with making it easy for people to move around and between campuses. From thirty years of knowing UB students and alumni, their students do seem very happy there. You can read the visit reports linked to this forum for more info. They generally have an open house in the fall which will offer good tours/info.

We found the financial aid at UB to be much better than expected when my D applied last year and their FA policies were not punitive when it came to outside scholarships. YMMV

Son applied to and got in to Binghamton, Geneseo and Buffalo, the three state schools he applied to. (Got in everywhere he applied to and decided on a state school due to cost, education and met his needs. Rankings of most were similar.) Did not apply specifically for merit scholarships or any financial aid. Son received $3000 from Buffalo which made an inexpensive school very affordable! (By the way, if you have a low EFC and high stats, you may get offers of grants and merit at some privates. Worth it to apply if you have any in mind and are in the top 20% or so of the stats of admitted students.

Buffalo’s engineering program has a great respected program and is ranked. Son is also interested in computer science, so I would expect their program to be better than Geneseo and Bing as the engin. program is better.

We were very pleasantly surprised at and impressed with Buffalo/campus/dorms and area. Ease to fly home too to several airport choices for us. They are building a new engineering and comp sci buildings also, with an expected opening of 2011, I believe. We have been receiving nice letters, etc from the Engin Dept and the communication within the dept is great.

All three schools mentioned, UB, BU and Stony Brook are all good. Definitely visit and see what your impressions are of each.

don’t write away the private schools just yet…i applied to buffalo, geneseo, binghamton, syracuse, and univ. of rochester and got into them all. SU and rochester lowered their price to the same as geneseo, buffalo, and binghamton. they will give out scholarships, grants, and loans to make it affordable…and don’t feel afraid to write letters to the privates saying this is what one college offered, can you lower your price. so don’t give up hope yet.
